I looked for muscles at Walmart today. I found cooked muscles. Don't remember if everyone is using cooked or uncooked. I usually don't still bait but thought I'd give it a shot. Any help ?

I am pretty sure that it is the cooked muscles being used. I'm going to try some tomorrow also. However last year they didn't work very good for me. I've learned to use no weight, or slip sinkers if you do use weight. You don't want the fish to feel any tension or resistance, since they have been feeding on dead fish laying on the bottom. Maybe someone else will help us out with some more insight.

Only that you might have better luck with mussels.

I have had great success with the Bantry Bay cooked mussels from Winco, the way I rig them is to tie on a #4 hook with no weight. The mussels have a round piece of cartilage in one corner I put the hook through that and hook it through the other side they stay on pretty good and have enough weight that you can flip them under hand or cast them out from the boat then put the rod in the holder leaving the line slacked. The Wipers bite pretty aggressively. you will cast off a few mussels but this only helps to bring the fish in, I find that the longer you are in the area the quicker the bite gets if they are in a mood to eat.
