Unfortunately it was a sucker. Still, it put up quite the battle on a 4wt.

I also managed some pretty rainbows, a cutthroat and a bonus smallmouth.[inline "big bow small.jpg"] [inline "pretty bow small.jpg"][inline "skinny bow small.jpg"][inline "bow small.jpg"][inline "big bow 2 small.jpg"][inline "cutt small.jpg"]

The scenery and solitude was spectacular too. Slipping on some wet grass and falling flat on my back hard enough to snap my landing net in half wasn't so spectacular and I'm definitely feeling it today [pirate]

Wow man pretty fish, and diversity keeps it interesting. Been hitting the weber lately down here just keeping the fly skills sharp, wouldn't mind seeing a rainbow or cutty once in a while like I used to up north

Thanks! I love those rainbows in their spawning colors. There's definitely a variety of species up here. I also had a carp on for about five minutes before it got off. Nearly had a grand slam.
I definitely need to keep up my long rod skills. Last year I think I only picked up my fly rod once and spent the rest of the year using casting and spinning gear for bass. I was in South Africa in February and spent a day chasing smallmouth yellowfish and the guide was giving me crap about my casting skills. That's when I decided I needed to fly fish more. To be fair though, he did have me flinging four tungsten head nymphs plus split shot. Definitely not what I'm used to. I still managed a 3 kilo yellowfish and a sharp tooth catfish despite my rusty casting skills.

Beautiful fish! And I am in envy of the variety of species you have been chasing. Good work.
Suckers get a bad rap. Those babies really put up a fight especially on a fly rod. Fun stuff

Thanks, I've been rather lucky this year. I caught a few largemouth in Africa too, but nothing good sized. If I would have landed the carp I hooked I would be up to 10 species for the year already.
Oddly enough, the catfish took a size 16 pheasant tail. That was surprising.
I was impressed with the sucker, it led me around that run for at least five minutes. Granted I would have been more excited if it was a rainbow that size, but I'll take it [

Thanks! Glad you guys are enjoying my posts. Hopefully I get out again soon so I can post some more [
] I've gotten pretty lucky on the variety this year. Two fishing trips in Africa, one in Utah and this last one in Idaho and all those different critters. I was hoping to catch a mudfish and a largemouth yellowfish in Africa, but it just wasn't meant to be.
