[size 2]Parks Department to Operate Facility Within Budgetary Constraints

Through Reduced Services, Higher Fees and Staffing Adjustments

Los Angeles — Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich announced that the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation will streamline operations at Castaic Lake and has increased fees to allow the County to continue operation and maintenance at least through the end of the fiscal year.

“The Parks Department plan includes measured cuts and sets budget priorities to allow the facility to operate more efficiently. We will continue to identify other long term solutions, public private partnerships and state funding to extend operations and services,” said Supervisor Antonovich. “The Lake is a vital resource to residents and merchants in our Castaic community and an important recreational venue for the entire county and region.”

To prevent losses to the local economy and allow summer access to county residents, Supervisor Antonovich initiated the temporary funding to defer Castaic’s closure over the last year. The new plan will begin February 1, 2004.[/size]

i guess popular demand kept it open , that and a nice jump in price for less service .

like dave said before , sure is strange how private owners can opperate a facility like this with a profit and better service than the government can with our tax dollers ?

Hey lonehunter, the Sad part about this lake is that it is owned by the state of CA but it is leased and operated by the County of Los Angeles. There is a lot of politics involved with this one.

Anyway I am happy that they are going to keep my stomping grounds open. YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!![cool]

Going to get ready for some good Kodac moments.

Hey Dryrod, Just the thought of it getting close to closeing gets me Sad. Just ask JR. I have started to turn into a Pier Rat. My son has started to enjoy going fishing on the piers rather than sit around and mope that they are or were going to close our favorite playground.

I'm glad that they will be open for awhile longer. Hip hip hooray.

i know what you meen , my honey hole is destend to go thru some changes as soon as funding is set . there rebuilding the dam and it's dike . this meens draining the lake , removing and rebuilding the dam , and alterations to the public acess .

i have been pushing for a handicaped acess to the area .

while the dam is removed i plan on doing a little clean up of the river bed . there's rerod and other debris that can be removed and a few brick piles to be constructed for the trout to use as there ambush areas . i also think i have a couple dosen lures that might be left laying around on the bottom .

I may actually have to go out there now. I am thinking about hitting perris or skinner soon. Heard there hitting bass pretty good. I don't think I ever did well there though for bass[unsure]

Oh yes, just in time for a little spring cleaning/retreival. Good thinking. Ther are not many people that get the chance to do that in a lifetime.

If you retrieve enough of your tackle then you might force Gander Mountain to go BK.

now we do have plenty of guys that snorkel and dive around the fishing piers here and make a bundle reselling the treasures they collect . i met one guy at oscoda that was coming up with cleo's and rapalas by the fist full , a few knives , glasses , watches , well all kinds of goodies .

at tippy dam , the local guy there uses a wheelbarel to haul his loot with .

at the foote dam we had some bozo ( no offence dave ) scuba diving during the salmon run right at the dam ! what an adiot ! hundres of guys fishing and he has the nerve to swim right in there .

I used to do that around some of the fishing piers in the ocean. Used to get alot of good treasures myself.

actually i had tried to post that it was one way to keep our fishing areas cleen and safe for others . not only do guys like us pick up debris from areas we all see , we go that extra distance to help keep our preys habitat clean for then aswell.

Hey there lonehunter,

I gotta tell my lure retrieval experience. A couple of years before I came back from Japan we had some really wierd weather two years in a row.

1996 was a very wet year and the reservior I always fished 2 days a week was really high. When Summer came, the water dropped 20 or 25 feet, I noticed a little old man in a boat going along the shore with this huge long fishing pole.

When he saw me stopped fishing and beat paddles. Later I went around a sharp bend and there he was with that pole WITH some hooks on the end as he was pulling off $30 lures from the steep walls, brush and even tree limbs that had been submerged during the high water and lost by anglers.

He Smiled, I remembered the $100 worth of lures I had lost![laugh][laugh][laugh][laugh]

looks like you have your self a project on your hands.

this could be a great opertunity for local youth groops to earn envirmental and comunity stewardship bages. dont for get to bring up the subject to your youth leaders in your area.

dont forget to take a rod with you, those fish will die and go to waist with the lake drained, take advantage of it, they have to restock afterwards.

Hi there lonehunter,

I suggest kitty kat fishys. They are pretty easy to catch and when you release them there is a high survival rate so the girls will feel good about the chances of the fish.

They give a good fight and don't flop around if you kow how to beach them. If you rub some of their tummys, they will make croaky noises and fall asleep. The girls would think that was charming.

Or take them black marlin grander fishing in Cabo San Lucas.

That is a good project. It would be good to teach them some catch and release techniqes. You might even be able to teach them some of the basic fishing knots, but using rope so that they can see the structure of how the knot works.
[signature]
that's a better idea than having them stand in the water and throwing a stick on shore and yelling "fetch" for the dogfish , lol !
[signature]
fishing knots ? thats an excelent idea for there program , basic knots is another badge for them to earn . [cool]

i'll be making the poking sticks for trash pick up for the event , i'll turn it into a contest [Wink] .

this is a brownie troop of 10 young ladies , guess who will be putting the worms on the hooks [crazy] !
