So our radio is old and I'm ready to install a new one.
Any advice?
Do they make a handheld replacement or do I need to keep it oldskol?
I'd like to hook up at the bay next weekend and start to learn how to use it.

I just sold a marine radio, too bad, that would have been ideal for your boat Scott. You can buy a hand held model but the range isn't as good. What is wrong with your old one?

A full sized radio isn't necessarily old school. The hand held units are have only a max output of 5 watts the while the others are 15 watt so you will get much better range, but then again not portable both will work but on bigger waters i like having that extra range. Just figure out which will be best for your needs .[

can any of you tell me what station to be on to communicate on my marine radio with the authorities at willard bay in case of emergency?

I would get the better fixed mount radio. If you get in trouble, you can't have too much power to get help. The hand held radios don't have much range and the speakers are small and hard to hear. Channel 16 is the channel for contacting others, most agencies monitor that channel, also most boaters so you can usually raise someone.

Just finished installing one. Best bank for my buck.
Be sure to get and MMSI (Maritime Mobile Service Identities) and enter it into your radio. Then you can use the DSC (Digital Selective Calling) functions.
To get your MMSI number goto:

My Lake Powell fishing buddy and I use DSC Posistion Requests to locate each other while out and about. The GX1700 has an internal GPS that makes DSC real easy.

Wyoguy is correct, 16 is the emergency channel. Just a heads up though, if you try talking to other people on it, the State Parks guys will get on you about not using it to communicate unless it is an emergency. That being said, if I can't get a hold of someone on another channel, I will give a shout out on 16, then move to another channel to talk, it they respond.
