My children would love to catch a catfish and I don't know how. We have caught trout, perch, crappie, wiper....but in their minds they just want to pull in a catfish. Can anyone please give me some pointers. Where is a good place to go. I know Utah lake has them but what I don't know is when is best, what to use and what Marina is the best one to visit. I hear people talking about fishing for them at night....but I don't know anything more than that. We have a small 16 foot boat but catching them from shore would be great too. Thank you in advance.

Around Provo boat harbor seems to be where lots have been catching them. Bait of choice... Carp meat, white bass meat, and I like to use raw shrimp with some garlic salt on it.. Good luck hope you can get into some. They are fun!

Cats aren't too picky, that's why they're one of my favorites to go after. Any of the marinas will usually produce. I like AF and Lindon, but I've heard lots of good from Provo too, as well as Lincoln.

As already posted, my favorites are carp and white bass meat. I like using shrimp, too. I use cooked, shelled medium or large shrimp. Just thread them onto a hook.

Many people use a Carolina rig to get the bait out farther, but I prefer to use no weight at all. Just hook and bait.

Pretty much any time of day can be good. I prefer mornings. Nights can definitely be best, but bugs can get pretty thick at night.

You've gotten lots of good info, can I add a couple things? First the night catting isn't very good for me right now, it will get better as the summer heat comes on, so fishing the day light hours is fine right now and more fun in my opinion. Second night crawlers work well for cats if you don't have the carp or white bass. When you get into it the minnows work well also but for a newby I'd just use worms. They're easy and will catch them so don't over think things to start. I prefer a bobber with the hook so I can set the hook easier, I suspend the bait about 18-24" below for shallow areas. Have fun and hang on, they do pull hard. Later J

are you all fishing from the shore?

I prefer to be in my tube or boat, but fish from shore quite a bit.

I do both, shore is easier and takes way less preparation but I fish different methods from the boat. I actually prefer my toon over the boat for cats, I actually troll slow and it works well for me, but it took a long time to figure out how to make it work, and it's a lot of fun but it does take practice and probably not a starting point for catfishing. Easier to show than explain I guess. If you want more let me know I'll PM some details. But I do fish from the shore at least half the time. Later J

[#0000ff]I am attaching the chapter on Utah Lake cats from my book. Feel free to copy and use it. Should help provide some suggestions and insights to help you get a few more kitties.

I will take this down in a couple of days...lurkers you know.

I had previously fished a carolina rig. What I have found is the with the bait on the bottom, you tend to get a lot more mud cats, which can be a nuisance. I have changed methods and drop the bait as mentioned 18- 24 inches below a bobber. As the water warms, I will fish just off the marina dike a few feet.

I like circle hooks, and just let them take it and run a few seconds, then just reel in to set the hook. It takes a little getting used to. I am no expert. Tubedude is # 1 on this subject IMO. Best of luck.
