I fished Strawberry with my wife and daughter Saturday we hooked up almost immediately landing a 19 inch cutthroat right in front of the resort then trolled across the lake towards the opening to the narrows with no more takers. My wife wanted to check out the pan cake feed and raffle, so we pulled up the gear and jetted over to the marina. The only problem I forgot to crank up the down rigger balls and before I realized it, I left them on the bottom of the lake. I did win a rod and reel combo in the raffle, but ended up breaking it when my anchor rolled over it going across the lake to pull out for the day. It was just one of those days.
On Sunday I decided that I needed to go to Willard to make up for Saturdays fiasco. I got on the water around 2:30 and trolled along the west dike until I ran out of battery an hour later because I forgot to put it on the charger the night before. I ran over to the feed lot and anchored up in 13 ft. of water and tossed out some mussels. It took a while for the action to pick up but I ended up catching 19 wipers and 2 cats, before calling it a day at 7:30 and heading home.
I think I know what I'm getting for fathers day, new cables and weights;-)

Thanks for the laugh. I have had days like that and more (at least you didn't find out whether or not your tow vehicle would float or not[:/]

Regarding: "... jetted over to the marina. The only problem I forgot to crank up the down rigger balls and before I realized it, I left them on the bottom of the lake."
I know some down riggers integrate with fancy feature fish finders to control depth of the balls with regard to the changing depth of the bottom. It seems like they would or should also have an alarm feature for speeding off with them still deployed. Someone here will know. If they don't have that, then they might add it.
An owner of fancy bus conversation motor home would repeatedly cost himself a lot of money and troubles by driving off with the shore cable (power) still plugged into utilities service. I integrated the transmission control with a sense wire to detect it is still plugged in to have it disabled. He could still start his engine as a backup to charge the batteries should the generator or charger ever have a problem, but he couldn't drive off until he puts his shore cable away.

Last year I lost 2 balls, 1 cable, 3 sets of pop gear, broke one swivel base, and cracked the housing on one of the downriggers, so I feel your pain.
