Oregon Fisheries Update
January 23rd – January 29th, 2004

Columbia River salmon fishing has not kicked off yet- except for gillnets that are taking a few “incidental” spring chinook in their directed sturgeon fishery. The nets fish every Tuesday morning through Wednesday morning and have taken about 400 keepers thus far. Sturgeon fishing in the mainstem is slow.
The Willamette is great for sturgeon anglers working the short stretch from Swan Island to Kelly Point Park. Smelt and sand shrimp are taking their toll and fat keepers are common. The Sandy and Clackamas had a bit of action to report in but cooler weather forecasted could shut this fishery back down. It is still a bit early for good numbers of broodstock fish to be present in good numbers. Counts at Willamette Falls are improving almost daily.
Smelt are due soon and anglers wielding dipnets are anxious. Numbers are not present anywhere in sufficient numbers to warrant dipping. The north coast streams have faded after their initial shot of post freeze steelhead. Good thing we are still several weeks away from warmer weather, more aggressive steelhead and fewer people. It's gonna get good!
South coast streams including the Siletz, Coquille, Elk, Sixes and Rogue River are all producing steelhead for anglers using the correct techniques.
No trout stocking is scheduled this week.
