Full Version: how crowded is Willard on a weekday?

I have every other Friday off and have been thinking about trying Willard at some point, I hate crowds and even more so on the water. So if I hit it on a Friday morning would you say it would be about half as crowded as a Saturday?

Probably about half, yes. But remember that Friday is the new Saturday and lots of people try to "beat the rush" by taking that day off. So it's nowhere near as quiet as say, Wednesday.

As usual with the power squadron, true craziness doesn't begin until 11 am or so.

We fished Last Friday and not as much pressure. But remember Willard is 20 miles from Hill AFB and alot of us have that 5-4-9 schedule with every other Friday off so there's usually a fair amount of anglers, but less of the power squadron.

That is my current schedule as well but will be going to 4-10's in a few weeks just in time for hunting season. Anglers I do not mind at all, just hope to avoid the goon squad if possible. And I'm on the fence if I should bring the bigger boat or the small one, kind of leery about such a shallow lake with the bigger boat.

I've been launching my 20' all year with no problems. Willard is almost full, the n marina channel is over 15 ft deep.
The reason I say go bigger is Willard can chew up a small craft very quickly if the wind starts blowing.

Are all obstacles/shallow spots well marked? My bigger boat is a 21 foot center console bay boat that will endure the worst weather, only time I have ever been forced to beach it was a bad lightning storm last year at the gorge, even had waves coming over the bow a few times but stayed out because the fish were biting. It is very stable because it's a heavy hull, but that can be a drawback for smaller waters.

Obstacles are pretty well under water exept for the east side shoreline where it shallows quickly. Your CC will be just fine. Just pay attention to your finder. There should be no surprises. The only thing I can think that might be an issue is a spot in the S Marina off of the middle dock. Launch from the N Marina no problem until you get used to the innuendos of the bay.
