Full Version: Can I store plastic baits together.

Hello Folks,

I would like to store several different brands of plastic worms and baits in one relatively small box to carry with me walking around a lake shore.

I've looked at Z-man baits and they say their plastic is different from others and not to store their baits with others brands.

I have been told that colors can mix when the plastics get too hot, but so far I haven't had that problem.

Thirty years ago when I did more fishing I stored some of the more popular brands together without an obvious problem but, I wonder if there are now some brands that should not be mixed.

Thanks,
Harry

I would usually error on the side of precaution. Some plastics are compatible but it is unfortunate to find out that they are not when you really need that special plastic the most.

My personal preferrence is to keep them separate in ziplock baggies. They can be easily stored in a fishing vest or even if you have extra pockets available in your pants.

I love to river fish with a multipocketed fishing vest and cargo shorts and even a fanny pack in order to take my assortments with me. [cool]

Ooh oh.

I may have made a mistake. This morning I put quite a few different plastics together in a large Tuff 'Tainer box. I did check them about 12 hours later and didn't see any problems but, 12 hours isn't much time. I really would like to carry many of my plastics, hooks, and weights in one convenient box. I'll check every so often and see what happens.

I kept the Z-man and Gulp with no liquid separate.

I do have a fishing vest, but I'm not used to the heat and the vest is just too hot. As the weather cools I'll be able to switch to carrying stuff in the vest, but by that time I suppose I will have found my answer to mixing many different brands of plastics.

Thanks,

Well, I mixed those plastic worms together a couple of days ago. That's not long at all and they haven't been exposed to above 90 degrees. So far they look and feel perfect.

Just wanted to add to this the kind of worms that I have mixed together, in case anyone wanted to know.

Zoom Trick Worm
Zoom Super Salt Plus
Strike King KVD Perfect Plastics
Yum F2 Ferocity
Culprit Original (old but nice plastic)
Casey's Competitor (old but nice plastic)
Bass Pro Shop Tournament Crawfish
Fisherman's Choice Tubes
Some 30+ year old nameless worm made of heavy, sturdy, soft, rubbery, pliable plastic.
Some various screw tail grub things like Johnson Beetle Spin.

Maybe some others that are old and nameless.

If anything melts together, I'll try and remember to update this.

Plastic baits usually don't melt together, the problem is that they can leach their colors on to one another, especially say a red and a white ones. The melting occurs when the plastic baits contact certain types of hard plastic. You have to use certain hard plastics boxes to store you soft plastic baits in, if you use the wrong type of storage box the soft plastics can literally melt right into the hard plastic boxes.

Thanks wiperhunter2,

I purchased a Flambeau Tuff 'Tainer for my main worm box. Your post reminded me to check that the worms weren't eating into the box. So far, a few days, so good.

You also reminded me that back in the 60s I had seen hard baits melt with plastic worms. Also at that time, none of the tackle boxes were worm proof. Luckily, I haven't put any hard baits in the worm box. I'll have to remember not to. I think I'll post a question about hard baits and worms.

As far as I know, these days the vast majority of boxes that are intended for fishing tackle are worm proof.

**When I was looking at Z-Man plastic bait website, they made a point of saying that their new, very soft but very durable plastic baits were not compatible with other plastic baits. They melt together. Their plastic will also melt today's tackle boxes. They recommend keeping Z-Man in the original bag, or separate baggies. They did say that Flambeau makes a box that their worms won't melt, but I'm not sure if they said which box.
