Had a nice trip up to Idaho last week. We caught and released 9 healthy 4 through 7 ft Sturgeon. The largest was at 80 inches. We sure got a lot more bites from the bugs then from the fish. The highlight was when Christian caught not just one but 3 fish on light tackle. Here is a video if I can get it to attach.

Congratulations to you and Christian on some fine sturgeon. It is obvious that he has caught several sturgeon. What is your definition of "light tackle".

Light tackle in regards to 150 sturgeon.

It would be medium in regards to a 5lb trout and heavy for panfish.

I think that reel is for up to 8lb test and the rod might be a medium rod.

My sturgeon set up is for 80 lb line and the pole is a 13 ft surf rod.

This was Christian's first trip and he caught 5 of the 9.

Nice!
Caught my very first sturgeon there 25 years ago. We had a canoe we'd use to get on that point. Last year Tater caught a six footer above the dam on a rattle trap and 17 lb braid.

Thanks, what pound test line was he using? I fish with 100 pound line and 80 pound leader. My most popular sturgeon rods are rated for up to 100 pound line. I have a 12' and a 15' surf rod (for fishing for sturgeon from the shore) but I prefer 5 1/2 to about 7' long from my boat.

This is where he cheated. He somehow wound up the rest of his 80lb braid on that little reel. He probably only had 100 feet on there so he was really lucky that the fish did not go on a long run.

We tied our hooks on 125 downrigger line. Then he decided to go real weird with his setup and had that huge rubber snubber on there. He is always experimenting with weird setups.

You will notice from the video that the drag kind of pulled out weird because of the stretch of the snubber but I think that was the only reason that pole did not snap. I wonder what kind of weight limits those large snubbers are rated for. He bought it for Kokanee but I think those are for chinook.
