Full Version: Forced myself to troll at Willard

After two successful days Friday and saturday catching wipers on mussels I decided to try trolling for some walleye, I did not bring any mussels with me, because if I did I would be to tempted to drop anchor and catch wipers. I got on the water around 4 pm and trolled between freeway bay to past the feedlot and back, then went out to the west wall going from the south west corner to the light pole. I got off the water around 7 pm. My first fish was a walleye near the feed lot and that was it for the walleye he joined me for dinner tomorrow night. I got a few wiper after that and let them all go because I'm good on wiper from the past two days. If you know a victor Sanchez I have his life vest that I came across while crossing the bay, send me a pm and I'll get it back to him.

Trolling is just another angler tool box technique many an angler see no use for. I'm here to tell ya some of the biggest fish not only come on cast or still fishing soaking a bait but on the troll. Whole new game key is understanding dive curves of lures, trolling speed, feet of line out and line diameter. Don't let yourself get locked into only one way as an angler...explore other techniques you may be pleasantly surprised....just saying from experience...

I agree with you, I am very familiar with many different techniques, I have spent a lot of time long lining, fishing with down riggers in fresh and salt water and back trolling in rivers. I was just talking about my experience in Willard fishing for Wipers the last two years. On this trip I wanted to try and catch Walleye and I knew if I brought Mussels I would end up anchoring and catching wipers instead, because it is so much fun. I have found that at Willard in my experience that mussels out fish pulling crank baits 4 to 1 its is even evident in the reports that people post where they will talk about fishing all day for a hand full of wipers trolling. At this point if I go out there and do not catch double digits it is a slow day and I have had a number of days where I caught multiple dozen and could have continued to catch them at will, had I not ran out of bait.

When we fish Willard primarily spring we get all kinds trolling cranks. Our best trip for Walleye was trolling cranks when bottom bouncers didn't produce. But mind you we've also limited out on bouncers. Good luck and work them cranks on troll you will find a grove no doubt.
