Got on the water early and caught a bunch of smallies on the fly. It was a chilly morning but the boat started without a hitch and the fish wanted to play. Managed a dozen or so each before we left. All smallies were cookie cutter 12 inchers.

The main purpose of the trip was to practice some distance casting with #7, #8, and #9 weight rods. Heading to Powell in a few days and chucking some larger flies so it was nice to get a feel for the heavier rods prior to being at Lake Powell.

Here's a sample of our day.
Fish caught on shad patterns - bunny streamers, clousers, synthetic hair wuch-a-ma-call-its

Those are good fish for DC. Were they still close to shore?

Yes, the fish were close-ish to shore. If we landed the streamers right at the bank the little guys would swarm. We had to let the fly get down a little, 'bout 2-3 feet, and saw the larger fish come from the depths to take the fly. The take was more like The boat was always in 30+ feet of water.

Cant wait for Powell this week. Heading down early Thursday morning out of Bullfrog.
