Picudo Sport Fishing Report
Sept 19 to Sep 26 2016
This week sure was off and on for the fishing. The NW winds early this week made for some tough fishing outside and a rough ride for those who fished up on the Pacific. Calmer conditions prevailed for the last few days allowing the fleet to get some good fishing in. The tropical disturbance southwest of us looks like it’s going to stay well offshore and will not affect us, so it looks like we are in for a good week of fishing. The first boats for the tournament season are starting to arrive so this party should be in full gear in a couple of weeks.
We have a fantastic Blue Marlin bite going on with many boats releasing multiple fish in a day. The sae temps have risen to the upper 80s and the bait is in thick. The hot area is from Los Arcos all the way up past Elias Calles. They are biting very close in roughly 2-4 miles from the beach and aren’t shy about what you present them. They’re catching them on live bait, lures, and sewed baits. Most of the fish are in the smaller size ranging between 180 and 300 lbs. We have had a couple of toads brought in to scale, one weighed out at 720 lbs, nice fish! There are a few Striped Marlin and Sailfish mixed in so the Grand Slams are a real possibility at this time.
The inshore Dorado and football YFTs are hit and miss. It seems one day they’re on and the next they’re tightlipped. The larger ones we were capturing last week seem to have moved out of the area and the average size is a smaller 5-15 lbs. The tuna are all blind strikes attacks and are grabbing cedar plugs, hoochies, and feathers. The early boats to the hot areas are getting a fair bite and it seems to slow down as the boat pressure increases. The Wahoo fishing has also picked up with quite a few being landed in the Poso de Cota and Migriño.
Offshore fishing is also a hit and miss deal but we have had some cow YFTs brought in. The banks are still producing and with this calming weather we should see quite a few more brought in. The porpoise schools area are also holding a fair amount and the fleet has been filling up. They’re mostly smaller school size up to 80 lbs. but those who find the schools are catching quite a few. The Blues are also still biting and it seems that everybody is getting a couple of shots a day at them! So it’s time for us to enjoy the last of September as the fleet will be here in force very shortly. The tournament season is getting ready to kick off and our quiet town will transform into a frenzy! If the fishing holds things are going to get very interesting! We are all looking forward to it and the economic injection to our local community! Get your reservations early as the dates are filling up! Time to bag a fatty! Yar!!
