Started day 1 with high hopes as we ran to the spot where Dusty had caught the large smallie on Sunday. After about 15 minutes we boated the first keeper on a topwater. We then caught a few more topwater fish that were all too small, as well as three small catfish all around 5 pounds each.
Being accosted by swimmers, we decided to move downriver to an area suggested to me by a non-participant in the classic. We stopped and within 5 minutes or so we were catching fish. 14 fish later we caught another keeper, a largemouth to go with our spot. After catching several more fish, we caught another keeper, before moving to our third spot. We caught one keeper there to give us four. Moved back to the spot before and within a few minutes we caught a keeper spot. Finally after pitching over and over to a laydown, I was able to hook and boat another largemouth. Dusty then culled one of our spots to complete our limit.
Caught close to 40 total fish all day, but most were 10-11 inch spotted bass. Ended up day one in 5th place with 6.94. All fish caught on topwater, crankbait, jig, and creature bait. Most effective bite was in more stained water with crankbait. Also hooked a mammoth something late in the day that drug us into laydown and ended up breaking off.
