Hello Everyone!

I haven't been on the forum for awhile, how is everyone? I am posting because I have a question about fishing in South Idaho.

You see, I haven't been on the forum for awhile because I learned that my family might be moving to Idaho Falls from Coeur D' Alene. We don't know exactly where in Idaho Falls we might be moving to, but there is a high chance of it. I am posting because I want to know what kind of fishing opportunities there are down there throughout the year. I am just curious because I have NEVER fished down there in my 10 years of fishing. I am pretty adaptable when it comes to fishing in different areas, I just need to know what is down there.

I have a boat, a 1968 Silverline I am working on restoring and going to use as a fishing boat later. It might work soon for when/if I move down there.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

We've got you covered. Most the fishing here is for trout. If you're a purist it's fly fishing for trout. There's rivers, creeks and lakes to choose from. If you research past posts for this area you can pretty quickly figure out where some bass fishing is but most of them are smaller unless you get below American Falls reservoir. There's some big fish in the snake. The south fork is best known but the Henry's fork is just as good if not better in my opinion. Then there's island park reservoir and Henry's lake for some good size trout from lakes about 1-1.5 hours north of town. Island park also has some Kokanee but most people targeting those here go to ririe reservoir which also has trout, bass and perch plus it's only 15-20 minutes from town. In the winter the Henry's fork can have some good winter fly fishing. For ice fishing Henry's gets most the talk from thanksgiving to January first when it closes. Close to town most go to ririe on the juniper side (by the dam) if the weather is cold enough to safely freeze it. Many also ice fish island park but it's often messy due to rising water all winter. Some will ice fish American falls for trout and perch but the last few years there's been little talk of that one. Hopefully that will get you started but feel free to ask more details once you have a better idea on where, how far and what you want to target. Wow! I had no idea that there were many places and opportunities for trout in Idaho Falls! I am amazed! I actually just looked at the regulations for the Upper Snake Region, and I am even more amazed. Up here Sturgeon are illegal to target or catch, and down there it is catch and release with barbless hooks and sliding sinkers, and must not be removed from water! Now THAT is something I have had experience with. I caught sturgeon a lot when I visited Oregon in 2012. Look at the attached video and you will see what I mean. This was back in 2012 when Sturgeon in Oregon had to be between 36" and 56" to keep. Now I REALLY need to restore my boat for if I move!
