So a friend of mine from work started me on an e-mail list with all the great deals on ice fishing gear and well,,,, I don't have much control when I'm excited about something so I've managed to pick up a new insulated shelter, a nils auger for my cordless drill and a bunch of tackle and a new rod/reel combo... Anybody else having this problem... I need help before my wife finds out... sure would like a new pair of bibs though... Anyway what are you doing for the ice season anything fun??? I understand the new BFT ice contest rules may be out next week, so the season is a coming... Anyone finding any ice up high this year? Haven't seen any first ice posts yet, but I did hear ice is starting up in Island Park this week... Well happy anticipation... Later J

J, take a look at Berne brand bibs. They are work clothes and not fully waterproof, and they are at least as good as Carhart but less expensive. Mine are really warm and comfortable.
I'm going to limit myself to a few jigs and spoons this year. Yeah, sure.

I have the same problem. I made the big purchase already, propane auger. The decision between electric drill, electric auger, and propane (then which propane brand) was seriously harder than picking any house I've ever bought. Which is

Going down to lehi to pick up an insulated shelter tonight along with a couple new rods and reels. Also picked up a fish finder a few weeks ago. So no its not just you I'm in the same boat as well.

The good news is you're probably close to not having to spend more on it the next seasons except for wax worms and the like.
I went all the way on my ice fishing equipment, so there's nothing to add nor upgrade, so I added to my surf fishing equipment in the last few months.

Thanks for the tip Rocky I'll check them out. Or maybe I should just sew up my current pair. For those of you that are good at resisting temptation check out icefishingdeals.com and get on their list. They let ya know of new bargains several times a day. They scour all the popular sites and pass on the best prices. I got a 6" Nils auger for $149 delivered with the drill adapter. A two man insulated Frabill shelter was $150. Pretty good prices on things. After selling my old stuff on KSL the upgrade wasn't too expensive. But be warned I've bought stuff I shouldn't have to fill my free shipping amounts. Good luck. J

I just bought a new 10" gas auger last year and had no intention of needing a new one, but after talking too much to a friend of mine, he got me rethinking weight and size of stuff and since I already have a nice cordless drill the investment wasn't too bad to get the Nils. Sure hope they are as nice as everyone says. Plus places like Porcupine nearly do me in when I have too much weight in the sled. So I hope this was a good choice for me. Have another buddy that got a propane auger and he totally loves it. So I think it just depends on how we fish and if we have a tow vehicle or not. I'm tempted to get my old sled running again, but not right now. Later J

Oh dude I'm sorry, think we need to start a support group, maybe we can meet on the lake and work to overcome our addictions. Later J

Ron I keep thinking I have what I need and then I get new ideas and I'm in trouble. I'd love to get set up so I could do the Cascade trip with the crew, but I still need a few things. Always something to keep me broke. Later J

I'm sure I'll add a few optional things. One of those swivel hunting blind chairs would be comfy for ice fishing. I sit on a bucket. But, that's lighter.

I've got a never used Lowrance Elite 5 HDI Combo for sale if you're interested. I'm motivated to sell!

I have everything I need and then some. I would like to get a larger shelter. But then I'll "need" a larger sled to fit everything I have plus the larger shelter. I'll "need" an ATV to pull all this gear. I'll see what I can do to convince my sweet wife.

Jeff,
I just bought an older snowmobile in prep for the Cascade trip in case the snow is too deep for my atv.
I have my Showdown finder and 4" auger ready to go. Hotel reservations next.
By the way, I am in Montana for pheasants with Cole Richards from Newton, he says he knows you and that you are a super nice guy.
I concur.

Ice Fishing is my favorite kind of fishing. I didnt seen any ice in the Uintas when I was up there 2 weeks ago. Water temp was 39. There was a small amount of ice on Silver Lake in Big Cwood Canyon over the weekend.

Its all good luckily ksl has some deals on stuff like that ice tent. I'm hoping my next purchase is a nills auger but that one could be a few weeks out for me. But I'm in on the support group idea.

Probably throwing gas on your budget-burning fire here but I sure like having my Deeper in my pocket for shooting through the ice fast. You carry a manual auger, a thermos and the fish finder around, drill down to clear ice, pour half a cup of hot water in and drop the finder in. Covers a lot of water fast.
Don't forget a runner kit for your sled....oh and maybe build a custom smitty sled with some thrift store skis, great way to move your tent around.

Thanks for the offer, but I have a fairly new finder, so I'm good there, but thanks for letting have a chance at it... J

Good luck convincing your wife, I'll be at that point really soon myself... Needing a power means to get on the ice... Got to keep myself under control, I don't need that much gear... Later J

Shane,
I'm about the same spot you are on that sled, I keep looking at the 700 RMK's from the late 90's they are getting cheap and I loved that sled for a great torquey engine... but I rode the new style sleds and now I want one of them, but they are sure a lot more money... Anyhow, so you're hanging out with Cole are you? That's scary company.... He's a great guy and has a great family... Our daughters played soccer together for a lot of years... We spent a lot of times on the side lines, but never made it hunting together, that would have been alot more fun... Hope you guys have a great trip... And hope to see ya on the ice soon... J

Hey thanks for the update on the ice... That new weather report looks like next week may change things... At least in the high country... keep your fingers crossed.. Later J
