Hi all....I hear and read a lot about Macs and Burbot through the ice up at the Gorge. Trying to plan a trip with my son and his firefighter buddy from Calif for this mid Jan time frame. Anyone know of a consistent Rainbow bite up there through the ice ? Thinking of staying at the Flaming Gorge Lodge for a few nights but not sure how that end of the lake produces as far as ice fishin goes. Sheep Creek bay maybe ? Any pointers appreciated. Thanks !

Not impossible, but rare there's even ice down that low in the canyon in mid-January. Boats launch year round near the dam anymore. Sheep Creek can be a good spot for bows if it freezes. I've seen it frozen good enough to fish twice in the last 10-years. So just stay flexible. Probably better to target Buckboard up to Confluence for pups during that time, that's where they're most abundant. Some good rainbow fishing up there too, in the shallows along points and in the mouth of coves. Pups will typically be along main channel breaks in 50-80ft of water, but it's common to catch them suspended too. Every year is different but hopefully the ice continues growing downlake and the fishing reports will follow. Hope it helps, Ryno

Ryno gives some good insight on the gorge. If your Freind would like to do some iceing for bows sheep creek can be a blast!!

Been away from my computer for a while. Thanks for the reply. Sounds like I'll need to wait a couple more weeks for a current ice report from that area. I'd be up for pups and bows any day !

Right now, the rainbows are coming in anywhere in the water column. From just a few inches under the ice to the bottom in shallower areas. ~25 ft.
