Willard has safe ice. - PREDATOR - 01-18-2004 Thats the view from on willard today. Actually the view from willard as soon as I arrived around 3:30 pm. Anyways, the ice is there, and its plenty thick. We ranged in ice thickness from 4 to 7 inches. Some places it was crystal clear and seven inches thick, others it was cloudy and seven. Some places it was clear and four inches thick. So, it does vary in thickness, but its thick enough. Plus if you fall through you will be able to step back out. I drilled a hole 400 yards off the dike, and it was three, yes 3, thats THREE feet deep. Willard is in need of some serious water. Doesnt look good at all for next year. Anyways, the depth changes. It was five a little closer to the dike, and we found on hole that was near eight feet deep. Anyways, as you can see, I had the camera out on the ice documenting the trip for all the BFTer's at home "computer casting". But after I took three pics, the batteries died. Thats what you get for checking the batteries before you head out. Anyways, for tackle and tips, the word is, "FUZZYFISHER'S MINNOWS ROCK!" We used northland fireball jigs with the treble stinger, "oh the value of a stinger"! We used 1 inch kalin grubs on a lead head, and lindy fuzz-e-grubs. Tipped with a crawler or one of the fuzzyfishers minnows. Let me say, A big thanks goes out to BLM for not stopping by to pick up some of those minnows. They are all mine now! And a bigger thanks to the fuzzy man for providing them. The fish hit the crawlers light, it was a LIGHT bite. But they smacked them minnows! Now, as I said before, the batteries in the camera ran out so I didnt get any fish pics, and I am going to refrain from making any claims without the picure positive proof to back it up. Mostly because my dad caught a species, that wont be belived, not to mention the size of the fish. I will say this, beef up boys! I had a fish break my line, not due to a bad knot, most likley due to frozen drag. Snaped that line like the croc hunter on a snake poacher. Anyways, theres serious buisness here though. The rocks are treacherous. Theres big deep holes coverd by snow out there on the dike face. You could step into one of them and get banged up pretty bad. I fell into a couple that sunk me nearly up to my waist. Just glad there wasnt any jagged rocks down there. Or that I didnt fall forward and break a leg. For those of you thinking about heading out, I will be out there next weekend, saturday morning, and then again in the evening. And again the week after that. Next time to have pics of fish! [signature] Re: [PREDATOR] Willard has safe ice. - Teroy - 01-18-2004 I bet it was a muskie? What dike where you fishing off of? [signature] Re: [Teroy] Willard has safe ice. - PREDATOR - 01-18-2004 I put this up to clarify my location. Theres a lot of guys here, and theres sometimes some confusiuon as to what dike is what, I believe this is the most popular dike naming. I was fishing the south dike. But next week I will be on the west dike, as far north as the crappy road allows. [signature] Re: [PREDATOR] Willard has safe ice. - Theekillerbee - 01-18-2004 Sweet report Predator. Don't keep us chompin' at the bit for too long. Give up the fish pics! [signature] Re: [PREDATOR] Willard has safe ice. - Xman - 01-18-2004 looks like we need to start a poll for what kind of fish was caught there. my guess is a muskie also. or it could be a big brown. [signature] Re: [Xman] Willard has safe ice. - tomegun - 01-18-2004 Is there Muskie in Willard? [signature] Re: [PREDATOR] Willard has safe ice. - Old_Coot - 01-18-2004 I was thinking Lake Trout but that pond has got to be a whole lot deeper than it is. So, my guess is rainbow ... [] [] [] [] Nice photos Pred. Almost makes a guy want to start a new hobby.[] [signature] Re: [Xman] Willard has safe ice. - aquaman - 01-18-2004 i going to say it was a big ole catfish [signature] Re: [aquaman] Willard has safe ice. - PREDATOR - 01-18-2004 Aqua, I was in 2wd the entire way out there. the guys headed to harold crane WMA have kept the road packed down and pretty good all the way to the south west corner, but its 4wd territory from there on. Looks like the only guys out that way are on ATV's. Ok, you guys are killing me with your guesses. The oddball fish my dad caught was a nice perch. Fat one. Willard is not usually known for being a perch fishery so I figure some guys will call B.S. but its true. He took that big old minnow on that fireball pretty hard. No lake trout, musky, or trout species. [signature] Re: [PREDATOR] Willard has safe ice. - aquaman - 01-18-2004 thanks for the info mike one more question did you happen to go by the south marina if the gate is open it might be safer to walk out that way then down the rocks [signature] Re: [aquaman] Willard has safe ice. - PREDATOR - 01-18-2004 I didnt, but I doubt it is open. Seems like historically they never open the south marina until april. But with all the new improvments they did there, that may be in a for a change as well. Its not that bad walking through the rocks, just let the sled slide down ahead of you, then pick you way through. Plus the south marina is so far away from deeper water, it would be a pain to walk out from there. [signature] Re: [PREDATOR] Willard has safe ice. - walleyebob - 01-18-2004 Hey Predator, did you get any Walleye? Maybe me and Brad should head up to Willard instead of Deer Creek today. I'm pretty sure we will get skunked at D.C., but I don't know where else to go. Bored with Utah Lake allready. I need walleye!!! Walleyebob [signature] Re: [PREDATOR] Willard has safe ice. - Theekillerbee - 01-18-2004 I've seen a couple of hog perch come out of there. They aren't in there too thick, but every once in a while, you get a really nice 13" perch to chomp on your bait. Congrats on the nice trip. [signature] Re: [PREDATOR] Willard has safe ice. - MGB - 01-18-2004 Nice report Predator. The summer of 2002 I caught a perch over by the island trolling a ratting rapala that was about 10". [signature] Re: [PREDATOR] Willard has safe ice. - Xman - 01-19-2004 theres rumours of muskie making it into willard since they opened the gates on pineview the last few years. i especially had a guy telling me that at old angelrs inn. thats pretty cool to see a big perch come out of there. as the bee said not alot of them. i myself have caught two out of the bath tub. [signature] Re: [Xman] Willard has safe ice. - petty4life - 01-19-2004 mr X we still need to get you to walk on water[cool] [signature] Re: [petty4life] Willard has safe ice. - Xman - 01-19-2004 maybe fish lake party. the lure of catching a big splake just might drag me out there.
