Minn Kota PWM conversion - MasterDaad - 05-02-2017

Hi all,

I've got my eye on a PWM to replace the controller on my MinnKota E30 motor for my tube.

Before I pull the trigger I thought I'd ask if anyone has one they've used and like before a re-invent a wheel here...

Thanks

Pulse Width Modulation will greatly increase the energy efficiency for use at less than full power, so you will get a longer duration of propulsion out of the charge on your battery instead of producing waste heat or you can get by with a smaller battery for less weight. It accomplishes this by rapidly pulsing full power instead of using resistance. If you mostly just use full power, then it won't change efficency.

Thanks Ron. That's why I'm getting one.

Mine spends most of its time on settings 1-3. I rarely use 5 unless I really need to hustle back to shore.

I've got one on my motor for my toon, totally love the extra speed control... J

They do add some extra clutter to my toon set up, but a lot of the fishing I do from my toon I like to go slower than my motor would go in first position. The PWM lets me dial in speeds as slow as I want. Before I had to keep turning the motor on and off or use fins. This is much better. J

Which brand did you use?

Do you have some pic of your set up? I am thinking about adding one to mine along with some steering controls so I'm not reaching behind me to control my direction.

I'll have to check, I just got one off Amazon that had the right ampage. Wasn't very expensive, I think less than $30, but it's been awhile so I don't remember for sure. More later J

I'll try to get you some photo's and attach them here... I know everyone thinks I'm crazy, but I put my motor right in front of me so I don't have to reach over my shoulder or turn around to steer my toon... I don't like to wear fins to help guide me and so the motor in front of me works great for getting my toon right where I want it... I built a solid bar that goes from side to side that the motor attaches to and then the bar is attached to tubing that slides into the footpeg ports... I use the bar for both the motor and as a foot rest... I like it that way... More later... J

I'm looking at one for $28 from Ebay... 40A PWM, plenty for my 30 motor.

I'm also looking at a much better water proof option with a water proof control knob for $70. For my tube this looks like overkill though.

Thanks
