Ririe Updates ??? - duksnfish - 06-09-2017

So I've been in Canada fishing last couple weeks and just got back home. Any updates on how fishing at Ririe is going? Kokees still hitting? Perch? Hope everyone has been doing well.

I caught 17 kokes last Thursday. Thirteen were to small to keep and four were in the 12" range. Also caught two trout. Fished in the 10-20 fow range. Still looking for the larger fish. I tried the 30-40ft range with no luck, even though I'm marking fish at that level. I fished around the power lines up to Meadow Creek inlet.

Fished today around the wires and up to the narrows caught 11. one in the 16 inch range and the rest in the 12 inch range. All Kokes. Mid 30 FOW caught some as we were putting them down I work for the county up there at juniper. F&G has been doing gill netting all week. big kokes are back. they have some in the 17-18 inch range and close to 2-2.5 lbs!

Out tuesday bass fishing caught about 45 in an evening with a buddy. biggest was 16 inches. the males are up making nests with the females in deeper water still.

perch fishing is good too. some bigger ones too caught several in the 12 inch range already.

Made it out a couple times in the last week... Nothing too spectacular, but plenty of action. Brought home 8 the first time and 9 the next. All of them in that 12 inch range. Caught some smaller ones as well as a few trout. Pretty much all came in 15 to 25 ft down... Using both Dodgers and pop gear.

Good to hear the F&G are netting some larger class fish. Maybe a good year after all. I'll have to start fishing a little deeper. I suppose the warm weather is starting to influence the depth. Have to get out next week and try again.

So I've been down and out with hernia and just getting back on feet and feeling up to getting out and trying for some koks. Is anyone still catching anything? I know it's hotter then crap around here during the day, but, is early morning working at all? Depth? any size to anything? Hope to get some updates and maybe get out this next week if anything at all is biting. thanks

Morning, first 2-3 hours of light. Wedding rings and hoochies both working well. Depth 20-35. Kept a limit size 14-16" & fat! Lots of smaller fish caught, most of those came off as we were netting them.

So finally got out yesterday. Early morning launch at sunrise. Couldn't ask for better weather. And yes, I was totally surprised at the bite. Kok's were on and pretty good size to them. Only draw back is that there was a ton of others fishing for them too. Some had good luck, others were just beating the water. Depth was as everyone has been saying, 20-30 feet and variable speed between 1 and 1.5 mph. Will sure taste good to have some fresh fish to eat. Smile be safe on the water as a ton of other boats, most respectful, but, as always, some just buzz by and their wake can take a lot of water on board.

Got out to Blacktail about 0520. Had to wait for the gate to open at 0600. No one fishing there so trolled down the lake. Ended up at Juniper and caught 10 and kept 6 kokes. Lots of marks at the 20-30 feet. The ones that I caught were at 40 ft. The bigger fish I cleaned are starting to get soft. We'll start seeing color in the next two weeks.

I caught fish with a pink\ silver Smile blade and pink dodger. Also used a green dodger with a green and white houchie but didn't catch any thing on it. Got off the lake about 1200 when the ski boats arrived.

Going to try again in the morning.

Re: [fallsfish] Ririe Updates ??? - duksnfish - 07-15-2017

Went again yesterday, and hit the water about 6, was a bit slower than 2 days ago, but fish had moved and a bit deeper. Still did well on gold flasher trimmed in chartreuse with pink hootchie or pink/chartreuse wedding rings. Our fish were solid but kept them in cooler with ice/water and stayed great. Put in at Juniper and a few skiers but was surprised how few there really was for a Friday.

Only real problem we had day before with a lot of boats was actually from the Park and Rec work boat who twice went through a group of 5 fishing boats full boar. Called P&R about it and the lady I talked to told me she was to busy to worry about a boat complaint like that and to call some one who cared and told me to call commissioners/sheriff if I wanted something done about the speed etc. She said, you wouldn't believe how many complaints she gets about speed and no respect on the water concerning their boat and she just didn't have time to deal with it as they had more important things to worry about. Called commissioner Radford and basically got the cold shoulder too and all kinds of excuses about what happened. So I guess, we just put up with even the county not caring about other boaters etc on Ririe even though, as I told Commissioner Radford, the Bonneville county sheriff is always pushing boat safety, courtesy, and being good boater on waters in Bonneville county. So ya have to watch out for everyone, including the county employees in their boat too. Good luck and the bite is still on.

Fished Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday last week and had no problem with boats speeding around us on Monday through Wednesday. Friday the non-fishing boaters started at10. I will enjoy fishing at the beginning of the week as the fishing has been fantastic for the kokes.

I got out Thursday the 20th launched from Blacktale at 6 am and ran to the power lines found the fish at 40 ft. Pink hoochie with a blade behind a dodger was the ticket as the morning went on kept moving deeper caught most of my fish at 50 and 55 they ranged from 10 to 16" caught 30 kokes and 10 bows. Was off the water at 11 am there was no color to the fish still chrome and firm.

Just got back from fishing Fire. The jokes are hitting hard in 25 to 35 ft.

Found that if you gut them as you catch right away or put them in ice water they stay firm. If you put them in a live well or stringer they will turn mushy due to high water temps.

Re: [VNCowboy] Ririe Updates ??? - fallsfish - 07-27-2017

Got an early start at Juniper and limited by 11:00. Four were 14" and turning red. Ice is the trick to keeping them from getting soft.

Fish were biting at the 50 fow. Pink was the color behind a white and pink dotted flasher. The fish seem to be schooling around the dam area. Saw a guy jigging for them and he got his limit early (9:30).

Re: [fallsfish] Ririe Updates ??? - MMDon - 07-31-2017

The trick is to cut their gills and bleed them out in a bucket of water for a couple of minutes and then bag them on ice without allowing them to float in the water. This will keep the meat from breaking down and prevent some belly burn before you get a chance to gut them.

Re: [obifishkenobi] 7/5 - VNCowboy - 08-31-2017

Are the jokes spawning and where are they schooling at?

It is going to be the middle is Sept before I maybe released form the toe amputation I had today.

Thanks

Re: [VNCowboy] 7/5 - Fishbouy - 09-04-2017

Fishing for kokes was still hot 3-4 weeks ago ( though small), but it has steadily dropped off. they were in 60-65 feet of water, fishing stunk 2 weeks a ago and was even worse last week, way fewer anglers so apparently the trend wasn't just me.

As the water cools it will get better and it seems at some point right before or after the lake turns over the fishing on the surface will be red hot. Really only caught that one year.

Good Luck.

Maybe if we catch enough of them they'll be bigger next year

Does anyone know what is going on with the water level at Ririe? Are they just lowing it to seasonal levels or maybe dam work? Just looked at the Hydromat and they are dumping it fast.
