Willard 7/29 - obifishkenobi - 07-29-2017

Had pretty a good day at Willard this morning, I got on the water around 6:00 at the south marina. I fished the rocks with a slip bobber and worm first and caught a cat on my second cast then went a half hour with out a bite, so I moved to freeway bay and anchored up on my favorite hump in 18 feet of water and fished mussels I caught 13 wipers and 4 more cats there until 11:30 when I ran out of bait. One of the wipers was puking up little 1" shadlets. Over all a good day.

Nice report it looks like there's quite a few wipers in certain locations. Did you see anybody trolling for walleyes. Haven't been many walleyes caught this year. Did you see any wiper boils early in the morning?
The last time I bait fished for wipers we used nightcrawlers and caught them very good too. might want to take those along just in case you ran out of mussels.
Bait fishing in a boat is a good way to lose your fishing poles be careful. When those wipers hit boy they are like a train.

I saw a boat that appeared to be bottom bouncing and several more trolling, and there was a guy at the cleaning station with a walleye, no I did not see any boils I am hoping like everyone else that they will this year I got into one boil last year and it was a lot of fun. I had night crawlers with me, but by the time I ran out of mussels it was hot and the power squadrine was in full effect a good time to leave.

Thanks for replying. Yes that is the reason most fishermen leave around 11. They can't deal with the Rude boaters. I spoke with state parks at deer creek, about inforcement. He said not much we can do with budget they have. I say they just won't try because there is lots they can do, if they try.
I think at the gate they need to be told to respect the 150 foot law. I plan to take pictures and post violators.
Don't let them get away with that attitude " not much we can do". Please speak up!!

Caught a couple of walleye trolling two days ago. No wipers.

Doitall, here's a picture from yesterday, about noon. Dropped his skier behind me, swerved between me and the bank and then immediately cut in front of me. Good news was he heard his opinion of both him and his mother while loading his skier. Unfortunately, fishermen can be as bad as skiers. Had a nice blue Tracker come up the dike and passed at least this close last week. Wasn't able to get my camera out fast enough for a picture.

I remember years ago my father would get out his flipper and shoot a few rocks at them. Today they would respond with a 9 mm. I plan to show pictures to state parks people, don't expect much but figure "No complaints equals nothing happens"
Thanks

Larry

I had something similar happen to me at Willard scout a month ago. But it was two fisherman in a small 14" v-hull aluminum. I was fishing jigs off the bank about 10'. The boat rides the bank about 5' from shore goes around me and hugs the bank again. I guess the dude has never ripped a prop but down deep I was hoping it would be a first time experience. I was at Deer Creek yesterday (a first) and the boaters there take the rude award. I cannot count the amount of times I got swamped and I was in a 17ft Tracker.

WOW ! Larry, that guy was CLOSE, to you and the rocks. Good clear shot of his face at the helm. DNR should be able to do something with that photo.

I have been taking my new camera with me the last couple months. But so far, not had any that close.

Man, going that close between you and the rocks just proves that boat operator had way more boat than brains. He tears up an out drive or bangs up a prop, or rips a hole in the bottom, he's gonna be in deep........................... not water.

Where is freeway bay on Willard bay? Can you post direction or on map?

Freeway Bay is the south east corner of Willard Bay. Tubedude has posted maps in the past you can find them in the archive. I like to fish what I think is and old road that shows up as a hump on my fish finder that runs parallel a couple hundred yards off of the south dike starting in the far south east corner. I have attached a screen shot of my graph from 2 years ago when the water was lower, it is about 18 feet on top of the hump now off of the 4th power pole from the corner.

Tin-Can, I was in twelve feet of water, bouncing flys off the rocks. I'd guess there was less than thirty feet between me and the dike. I'm thinking he had to have been in less than 8 FOW.

Hey, I know that "hump" I think is may have been one of the road bases they used when WB was built. It actually runs most of the way from the south marina outlet, east, and maybe 80 to 100 yards off the south wall. In years with less water, I have anchored right on top of it and fished both sides where the slight water depth and temperature difference has held quite a few fish. Since there isn't a lot of structure at WB once you get away from the dike rocks, the island, or the new rock pile they dumped out there last year, finding one of those old road base humps can be pretty productive.

Photo posted is from 2015 when they were adding the new 3 feet of rock to the south wall. I was anchored off the feed lot / coffer damn area right on top of that hump.
