Cabela's Ice Fishing Shelter Kit - MRJ - 02-10-2004

Can anybody out there give me information about Cabela's ice shelter kit where the buyer supplies the plywood base? I am interested in both the pros & cons. It looks like a great buy but I am concerned about the ease of transport. I ain't as young as I used to be and don't want to rip my guts out pulling it across the ice & snow. Thanks.

I dont know any thing about this particular kit.

I did at one time have a minute man pop up tent. It had a particle board bottom. as far as sturdy it was fine, but the weight of it and draging it got to be a problem for me. I too am not as young as I used to be.

the holes were a bit of a hassle but not real bad.

there is a new material available now a form board you can pic up at the lumber yard. they use in on wood decks now insted of lumber. it is light weight and manages just like lumber. it is a plastic. I cant rember what is called.

keep in touch some one who has used it will pick this up eventualy.

I bought the Cabela's kit in Dec. I'm pretty happy with it. I used 1/2" Baltic birch ply coated with sealer and lacquer for the floor. I also rigged a pair of old skis that can attach to the bottom for ease of towing. I also have a piece of removable carpet with holes cut to match the holes in the floor. Not only does this add a lttle comfort but also serves as a template for drilling your holes in the ice. The down side of the kit is that it doesn't just pop up, but takes a little assembly time once out on the ice. Not a bad trade-off for the price though. I think that the foam core material that was mentioned is called Gator Ply. It's light and strong. Don't know about the price though. If you decide to buy the kit, I can send pictures of mine to give you an idea of what I did to mine.

Some pics would be really great. I am a D.I.Y. kind of guy so I think that would work for me. Is there ample room for a couple of guys in it? Thanks, Mr. J.
