Equipment question - Howieb - 02-17-2018
I currently live on the east coast and use a 5 weight rod. I have never fished the west. Will my 5 weight work for me in Utah. Next question I am considering picking up a switch rod as it appears the water out there is wider than what I fish here. Does anyone have any thoughts or advice.

5wt n a 9' will do most of the work. A 4 wt 9' is nice to have along too or a 10' for euro drifting. I wouldn't worry about a switch rod, the rivers around Park City are not that wide.
One thing you will need are small flies, much smaller than the 12's you use back east. Normal is 18-22's for us. Tiny nymphs like pheasant tails, barrs emergers, scuds, Blue Wing Olives and midges.

I think a switch rod is probably over kill for most of our waters. Your 5 weight will serve you well for most of your indicator nymphing, dry fly and streamer fishing. If you are considering a new rod however, Euro nymphing is really effective. A longer lighter rod is important for this technique. a 3 or 4 weight rod in the 10 foot to 11 foot range is perfect. I use a 11 foot 3 weight Syndicate rod and I love it.

It all depends on what type of fishing you plan on doing. I personally use a 9 foot 5 weight for most of my utah fly fishing...but, I will also use a 6, 7, and even a 9 weight depending on what I am chasing and where I am fishing.
Personally, I rarely use small flies and spend most of my time casting streamers and other large flies. I would say, though, that your 5 weight will work just fine.
