Fishing a DRAINAGE DITCH & the Quest for TROPHY Chain Pickerel Continues . I been on a quest looking for trophy sized pickerel. I took a stab fly fishing a drainage ditch today and hit emerald gold. Only the emerald gold a chain pickerel can sport. It was fast, fun, exciting fishing with some big pickerel in the mix. The cool thing about this video is you can see the size of the pickerel drop as the day proceeds. This is because pickerel can be very territorial. In other words a big pickerel may hold in a feeding zone and use it as his castle. When the king is gone a the jacks move in until a king pickerel retains the castle. Of course fish move and there is about 1000 other variables at play but that is the short. A drainage ditch can bring warm moving water and hold bait. Add to that trees, rocks and deep drops and you have a fishing paradise. It was tight casting but easily assessable. I stuck with a white yellow deceiver fly most the day, tried a perch pattern and ended with chartreuse. I did not use the perch too long but the chartreuse shined as my last resort. I lost count after a while and just enjoyed the fishing. For late late winter on a cold windy day you can't beat this fishing. A few of the fish were in the 3 to 5 lb ranges with many more in the 1 to 2 range. I still did not stick that 8 pounder but I saw one that could fit the bill hit some lurking bass. Next time I may set up with some bigger deceiver flies! Thanks as always for watching and hope you enjoyed the video as much as we did making it.
