Strawberry/soldier creek mudbugs - gmwahl - 07-10-2018
Hey guys,
The kids are nagging me to take them on a crawdad expedition.....I was thinking strawberry or soldier creek. Does anybody have up to date info on the crawdads up there right now? I will most likely be just doing a day trip or a quick overnighter (prefer just a day trip) with 4-5 attention deficient squirts and am hoping that I can get into enough to be very fast action.
Any ideas or info?

My grandkids always get tons of them off of Haws Point. A raw chicken leg tied to a 20 ft piece of string brings'em in every cast. Throw out wait 5 minutes and pull'em in.

This time of year they are everywhere. My favorite way to catch a lot of them is take a whole rotisserie chicken (you can eat most of the meat first) and tie it to a rope. Leave it in the water until 20-30 are attached to it and reel it in. If you are doing this on a dock, bring a net to catch the crawdads that drop off the chicken as you pull it from the water. I always take the grandkids over on the rocky shores in the cove by the highway on soldier creek side
Stop by the dollar store and pick up some butterfly nets for a dollar, Grab some chicken legs (we just tie them on the end of our fishing pole lines) And drag them up on the nets under water . They will catch as many as they want. Take some 5 gallon buckets to put them in, they are tasty

Almost every evening I see groups catching crawdads on the docks at the Strawberry bay marina. There are signs that say no fishing from the dock but nobody seems to bother them. They usually have coolers full. Most use the chicken leg thing or many just sight fish with nets. They look pretty successful.

Lots of kids always catching them on the docks at Soldier Creek ramp. Last couple weeks I see several right on the ramp under my boat when pulling out later in the morning.

seen people catching them at strawberry bay marina until they came down and told them they can't catch them from the dock!! ridicules!! at nights after dark they come in to the edge like crazy!!! After dark is by far better crawfishing!!

In my opinion the best way (and most fun) to catch them is take a couple of landing nets and buckets and walk the shoreline or wade out into the water with and headlamp just after dark. You can scoop up enough to fill a five gallon bucket pretty quickly. Kids always have fun doing this. We’ve always caught them at Renegade but any place where it’s shallow will work well.
