Byron Bateman has asked the board to consider a Premium Fishing permit for select areas that will cost the angler more money. Because good fishing should cost more. This sure seems like a slippery slope if there ever was one.

Byron is no friend to Utah fisherman and Hunters.

Very slippery slope indeed. I can see it going the same way as the Deer Hunt.. "Sorry, we'll have to miss the family camp-out this summer. We were unable to draw the Strawberry premium area fishing permit."

What an awful idea. Money grab.

It should be mentioned that the idea was thankfully shot down. It doesn't mean that Bateman and SFW won't try and bring it up again.

It is a slippery slope indeed. I can just imagine drawings at the Expo for premium fishing permits (LE fishing tags?) and an immense money grab that doesn't benefit the resource one bit. If more money is needed for fisheries conservation I would much rather pay more for a regular license than go down the path that the Wildlife Board, DWR and SFW have taken big game hunting.

It wasn't shot down. The board voted 4 to 2 to have the DWR research it and bring it back to the board for a vote.

I don't have 3 hours to watch that. Is a transcript available?

Can someone explain the justification for the increase?

Was there a time frame given or was it an open ended research request? I had heard that some WB members were not impressed by the proposal and didn't want it to proceed. Maybe that was incorrect. (or overly optimistic)

Perhaps a few anglers will get a somewhat cryptic survey on the subject soon, similar to the recent elk and Once in Lifetime hunting surveys recently issued.
