Hitting the cats a Willard 3/18/19 - wiperhunter2 - 03-19-2019

Wiperslayer and I got out on Willard today, fished from 8am to 1pm. Water level is rising but is clear so far, water temp was 41 degrees when we got there and got up to 44 before we left. We launched from the South marina and made a lap around the Island, not a bite. So we headed over to freeway bay to see if we could stir up some fish there. The solunar calendar said it was suppose to be a decent day, with it getting better later in the week but I had my doubts. We covered areas where we have done well in the past but nothing, even thought we were marking fish, bottom bouncing with worm harnesses on the side of the boat while dragging Fligs out the back. A few minutes till 11am I told Ira that the peak hours on the solunar calendar was 11am till 1pm today, a few minutes later, Fish On!! It was a slug fest on some nice cats up to 23" for the next two hours. Firetiger was the hot color, with a couple coming in on purple. We never caught a thing on the bottom bouncers. We were the first in the parking lot that morning but there were four trailer parked or launching when we got back. Nice day on the pond, we will likely do that more often in the coming weeks. Hope the other fish want to start playing soon.

Nice job! Thanks for the report. I’m wanting to get over there to see if I can pick up some walleye.

I know Pat catches them early in the day, but it seems like I can’t catch em until things warm up this time of year. Thanks for a successful report. Later J

I'm concerned about you all up North. I really think the water there is too cold for the catfish and the catfishers. Better wait a month. [pirate][Wink]

I am a big believer in the solunar cal. I have seen that many times when the time hits and the fish turn on and off, literally like clockwork.

We were hoping to pick up some walleye but it wasn't to be but I think that will be changing in the coming days, now that the water temps are in the 40's.

Yup Pat can pull them out of bed and get them eating long before us mere mortals can... Guess we just have to live with that... Later J

It's good to hear that the Kittys are starting to twitch thier whiskers. Where did I put that cut bait. Must be under that old Wyoming goat sausage.

Did you get plenty of sage in that sausage? I wonder how cats would like that.

Lots of sage, great in the smoker. I dont know about the Kittys but my beagle starts to slobber if I even loom at the freezer on

Hey WH2 - Just wondering what water depths the biting fish were showing up at? Near the rocks or out in deeper holes?
Thx

I was there today only one bit, we were after wipers. using the Itroll was changing speeds 1.2 to 3 mph
saw a lot on the fishfinder but could not get them to bit. I'm not that good at Willard Bay, I don't fish it alot
went there to test the new Suzuki 9.9 HP EFI, High Thrust. Shaft Length 25" (Extra Long). the last one I had was 20" thanks to a post from (SBennett) I bought it.

this Suzuki is ten times better than the 2013 9.9 Merc I had. Need to get this old one out of my yard.

You better get out there Bob, before the next storm comes in, very calm conditions yesterday, just wish a wally or wiper had wanted to play.

It was indeed a fliggin' good day. I think those LHBE minnows or any fish they can munch on, is the ticket right now. They are some fat cats again this year, likely eating good from all those dead shad on the bottom.

Re: [Optimizer] Hitting the cats a Willard 3/18/19 - wiperhunter2 - 03-20-2019

We caught most of them in 15 or 16 FOW. No deep holes just away from the shore.

Robert,
I'm glad you like your new motor, mine sure has been a gem(except the crappy throttle lock, need to put my ice gear away and order my iTroll).
I was in Cabo last week and fell in love with this gal, I wish my wife would be more open minded and let me bring her home....
