Weekend...sorta OK - Tin-Can - 04-01-2019 Went back to Willard South on Saturday morning. The docks had been pulled back in, launching was good. Thanks DNR. Weather was nice, but only thing I brought to the boat was a Willard Rock Fish. [sly] Sunday plan was to put boat on the water at BRBR. But plan got amended. Went by myself with my Cat poles and some crawlers. Had used up all my cut bait. Started at the bottom where several contest worthy Cats have been caught, but they were not interested in my crawlers. [inline 0758_lines_wet.jpg] Moved up river to the boat ramp, started getting some light tugs but no hook ups. [inline 190331_001.jpg] Moved up river again. Had just got my lines out, and sat down for a cup of coffee. One rod I had leaning against a large boulder got pulled sideways. Grabbed the rod, felt the pull and head shake........ landed a medium Carp. Oh Boy!! Fresh bait. [inline 190331_002.jpg] [inline 190331_004.jpg] Did the slice and dice and skin and chunk, bagged the chunks, baited up both lines with fresh Carp........and NADA....[frown] Moved up river to last spot to use up the crawlers and maybe a chunk of carp. Now, this would b e the best part, and most work of the whole day. Had one line out, crawler on a bait hook. After about 15 minutes, noticed the line slowly moving toward the bridge, and I had cast it about 30 yards UP stream. Aw, probably some kind of floating debris. Reeled in a couple cranks, felt like dead weight but it was moving to me. Kept reeling, rod bending almost into a horseshoe. Then saw it. Big momma Carp. Hooked good in the side of her mouth. But me without my landing net close by. Thought about how was I gonna get this cow up the 4 foot embankment without breaking something. The answer was on the top of my head............my hat. Took the hat, wrapped it around my hand, then around the 30 lb. braid on my rod. HEAVE.....repeat..........HEAVE. Drug that beast up and onto dry land about 10 feet from the edge. Then sat down and caught my breath . [inline 190331_006.jpg] [inline 190331_008.jpg] Not sure what she weighed, but she was 30 inches long and fat as a football. Her fillets filled a 2 gal. zip lock bag. Now I hope I can just make use of those two momma Carp. Still a little slow out there for the cats but it seems like they're getting a little more frisky with these warm days. I've about used mine all up again, so I need to find a couple of them... unless I find one the size you did, then one might do... Nice job and thanks for the report... So far all my channels of any size have come on carp this spring... I usually go through a night crawler phase, but not this year so far... So will be looking for some nice cats to come... congrats... Jeff [signature] |
