Flicker shad for koks? - muirco - 06-05-2019
Has anyone ever tried with any success flicker shad lures for koks? Just curious.

I've attended Jared Johnson's (and others) seminars at the International Sportsman's Expositions and learned that Kokanee feed on plankton and though they bite lures, their purpose for biting lures is not eating small fish, but protection of their plankton food source from competition feeding on it.
Though tiny squid don't exist in fresh water feeding on the plankton, the Kokanee seem to not know that, so perhaps a lure that imitates tiny fish will get the same reaction. Let us know.
I've taken advice from some of the fishing professionals to try things to find out what works and what doesn't because most times it doesn't and people generally want to only go with what is tested and proven to work and that is generally more productive.
But, there is value in learning what works and what doesn't by experimenting. Most fishermen experiment within a more narrow range of changing up size and color a little of what is working. But, I experiment with more variation.
It all depends on your goals. If I want the most fish, I could do what everyone else does. But, I like to learn and try things and sometimes I'm not trying for the most and instead trying for big fish.

I have caught a few on rapalas trolling for rainbows, however, i've never caught any of any size and there has never been much of a pattern to it.
I'll also add that a dual treble hook really screws up a kokanee's mouth!

I am aware they eat plankton. I also know they attack out of being irritated. Apex and kokanee killers do a similar thing, but roll upside down at very very low speeds. I know flicker shads don't do that at slow speeds and they make colors that would be advantageous to kokanee. I was just curious. I have boxes of squids, kokanee color spoons, and kokanee killers.

I fish with one friend on his boat with controlled depth fishing at Flaming Gorge and he likes hard curved things in yellow and green and catches a lot.

All these shad were in a koke in a lake in Calif 2 weeks ago posted on another board. That’s a lot for aggression.

Not one single hit from ANY fish. Tried on the surface and down to 40 feet; nada, zip, zero. Will not be trying them again for kokanee. Waste of time in my experience. Stick with what works. [

We did catch Kokanee, rainbows, and lake trout on the standard gear like squids, spinners, and Apex all behind various dodger types and colors. Orange was the hot color, but pink, purple, rainbow, and green also produced hits. I would still recommend you not use the flicker shad. They are better used for wipers & walleye. IMHO! A few weeks ago at the Gorge I had good luck on kokes using a split Rapala in black/silver....I had this off my planer board with 2 oz. added weight, and spin blade attractors 2' in front of the lure...caught me several nice med. sized kokes....that's about as close to a flicker shad as I'll get, and it's the first time I tried it on kokes....but it worked......and for me, for some reason, my Rapala's always work best off my planer boards...Guluk...

I don't know what Joe was using, but suspect they were just normal Rapala's which have a different action than do the big bill lures. Regardless, I would still recommend you just stick with the standard kokanee lures to maximize your success.[/size][/#800000][/font]
