report from last week - _6x_ - 06-19-2019 Hi all, My sister and dad were visiting for the week last week. (My mom and brother in law took care of the kids, so they are the heroes of this story.) I meant to post sooner, but work got busy. A few scattered observations. Strawberry: This was our favorite day. Caught a dozen or so fish, lost a number of others, in beautiful, flat wind conditions. All cutthroats, averaging 15 inches. It looked like with calm conditions they wanted to feed on the surface, but we didn't stay till evening. I bet in a still evening fly fishing might be good right now. Wyoming: Had some very cold fly fishing conditions, including getting snowed on briefly. Rivers were high. Stillwater fishing was ok, but not as good as last year. I promised a 20+ inch rainbow, which I don't think she quite got. I've started fishing the pink Squirmy Wormy (size 12, ish) in stained water, and I think it's a pattern worth keeping. Besides that, leech imitating streamers and standard smaller nymphs -- nothing fancy. Also, we went to Flaming Gorge for some smallmouths. Water (this is now old information so I'm sure it's warmer now) was 56 degrees at the southernmost part of the lake. I caught a couple of smallmouths, but it was slow. A couple of years ago I was there on a hot July day, and people said the smallmouth fishing was good in June. This year, in June, people said it would get good in July. The world is full of mystery. Deer Creek: A couple mixed bag days of rainbows (15-17 in) and smallmouths (small to 14 inches). Mostly on live night crawlers. Last year i was almost convinced that gulp worms would match night crawlers fish for fish, but not this year. Maybe the fishing is still getting better, but we didn't get close to a 30 fish day. I think you could break 20 if you had a moderate level of commitment, which I guess we didn't have. Morning (before 10am) and the last hour at night before sunset were the best. My dad is pretty committed to a jerkbait, which did fine for staging fish. Utah Lake: Stopped by and tried briefly before my sister arrive. Following advice I got here, I had a big catfish take the white bass meet, but it hit the end of the line I had out and dropped it before I set the hook. Oops. I need to put more effort into that if we're going to do it successfully. Hope to get down to southern utah for a day of fly fishing this week.
