Where to take scouts to camp/fish at FG - Jeremypalms - 06-20-2019

We are going to be doing our week-long campout at FG but I have only been there once and it was in the winter time.

We will be there from July 15-20

They want a campsite that is next to ether the reservoir or the green river. is shore fishing any good at either location? I am a failed fisherman who cant catch fish so any help of where or how to fish would be helpful.

I want a nice shady campsite but I really don't know what is out there. Are there any good free spots or paid that any of you would recommend?

Any other information like hikes, water rafting or any fun additional activities would be appreciated.

Thanks!

The fishing is “easier” on the gorge. But as far as free and shady camp sites those are few and far between on the waters edge. The lower green may suit you and your group better. Last I knew it was high flow coming out of the gorge though so rafting and water sports may be dangerous for the inexperienced. The lower green however had plenty of trees, plenty of history for hikes, and you can find a free camp site on Ashley National
Forest or blm land.

Around Lucerne marina is another solid option on the gorge however you may want to reserve a paid camp site. The fishing should be worthwhile and you can still find a place to hike I’m sure.

There is a nice camp ground( shaded and near the creek coming in) just above sheep creek boat ramp called Mann's campground. I don't know how much it is but it's nice.

this is one place I have taken scouts there two times
Mustang Ridge

The campground is situated among a dense pinyon pine and juniper forest dotted with sagebrush.

you should be able to find people that have boats
kids will not have fun fishing, unless some one knows how to fish
a lot of bass close if you do your home work you can find out where some fish are and how to fish for them
Kokanee and lake trout you need boats with downriggers

there is some neat places to go swinging and jump off rocks
if you have boats to pull tubs

you can rent tubs and float the green river

I’ve done it numerous times with scouts. Mustang Ridge is a great option, plus they have showers.

Hideout is wonderful for boat camping.

I live in Vernal and I am up there all of the time. Brown's Park might be a good option and it has good shade but if I were you I might go up tp ward Spirit lake it is beautiful and there are many lakes up there. Brownie Lake, Sheep Creek Lake and it's close to Sheep Creek Campground which is right on the Gorge.

I took a group all the way around to the east side of the Gorge some years ago. We avoided having to pay a camp fee. One advantage was when the wind came up, it blew everything and everyone back to shore. So if they were playing on tubes or small boats, etc., it made me feel a lot better. There are no official campsites over there, so there are no toilets or showers etc. So you would have to prepare for more primitive camping. That water can be very dangerous and get that way very quickly! One thing that hasn't been mentioned, there are a few rattle snakes around so make everyone aware of that. My group ran into several! If you are interested in that, let me know, and I can give you better directions. You would have to bring your own shade over there.

Everyone thank you for your knowledge. I meet with the scouts this Tuesday and I will go over this info with them and I will reach out with more questions I’m sure.

Any info is still always welcome.
