Fishing for Cats... - BiggerBait - 07-18-2019 Braved the heat last Friday afternoon to fish the Bear River. The good thing about fishing in the afternoon, there are No Mosquito's! Caught several smaller cats and one pretty good one. Had lots of help from a young, skinny pelican. Each time I brought a fish to the surface to net, the hungry bird would chase the fish around trying to eat them. When I finally hooked the biggest one and was ready to net, the bird figured it had had enough of being being hungry and led a full out assault onto my fish. I had the head of the fish in my net and the bird was tugging on the tail. I got the fish and fed the pelican the rest of my minnows. Had more fun watching and feeding the pelican than the fishing that day! [signature] Re: [BiggerBait] Fishing for Cats... - Cowboypirate - 07-18-2019 I would so love to see a video of that tug-o-war. You did not by chance shoot some footage? [signature] Re: [BiggerBait] Fishing for Cats... - Jig-fisher - 07-18-2019 Glad to see you found a nice one. The river has been slow to give up cats of much size lately. Did you put a tape to it? Looks like a big headed male cat. I've never played tug of war with a pelican myself. Thanks for posting. He sat there one entire day just hoping that his wishes would be received without delay so he could eat his fishes. But fishermen came from the city and cast their lines and nets they caught so many, what a pity to feed them to their pets. And when the sun sank in the surf and night was fast approaching the pelican thought that on his turf there ought to be no poaching. So, with the speed of Pelicans he ruffled all his feathers and looked just like the Taliban the king of Afghan weather. Went over to the city slickers and showed his giant beak which did result in dirty knickers and squawked 'It's fish I seek'. Then shook his head in sudden rage so everything went flying and gobbled quickly, at this stage the catch that he'd been eyeing. When he was full he turned around slipped quickly to the waves and swam, then lifted off the ground just thinking that the Braves would always rule the world of food and that a handsome Pelican was always in a happy mood when taking fish from man. by Herbert Nehrlich [signature] Re: [BiggerBait] Fishing for Cats... - SkunkedAgain - 07-18-2019 Thanks for the post, crazy birds getting too friendly... Kind of like the seals or sea lions off the coast... hard to catch a fish with all that competition... Thanks for sharing the story... It would have worse if the pelican had gotten a hook in it. I've hooked a few gulls over the years (not in UT) and even had a grebe take a live shad in New Mexico. They all took a fair amount of line off the reel on their airborne runs. A pelican would spool you for sure[] Thanks for sharing!
