Frustrating Day at Newton 9/26 - F15Hwhisperer - 09-27-2020 Went out on the kayak at Newton in search of some crappie on Saturday. I got to the lake at about 6:15, launched in the dark and started paddling, looking for marks on the sonar. I stopped paddling and set up shop and once I found them I could not get my jig to the bottom no matter how hard I tried! Dang crappie snatched it up before it even got close. I even shook a couple off and tried again, but another one would snatch it right up. ![]() In all seriousness it was a fun trip, lots of marks, and lot of hungry fish, I kept a stringer for the grill and turned the rest back. I probably turned back 3-4x the number that I kept. All were caught on small white jigs, most of them vertical jigging, but a couple while I was dragging my jig to paddle back over the schools, and one silly one ate the jig dangling next to my boat while I was unhooking his buddy. The average size was around 9", the biggest of the trip was 11". I was treated to fresh grilled/smoked fillets on a warm homemade bagel this morning. Awesome trip! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() RE: Frustrating Day at Newton 9/26 - doitall5000 - 09-27-2020 (09-27-2020, 04:56 PM)F15Hwhisperer Wrote: Went out on the kayak at Newton in search of some crappie on Saturday. I have the same one its much easier to work than my old hummingbird. I use the split screen and need to work on finding my way points. A little hard to pin down the spot when trying to return. RE: Frustrating Day at Newton 9/26 - BURLEY - 09-27-2020 Thanks for the report. Is the ramp still open to launch boats? Itis my first finder, so I can't compare with others but it has sure helped me to find more fish this year. It has been particularly usefully for crappie and Kokanee. I haven't really used the the way point feature much yet to be honest, I should start using it more. (09-27-2020, 05:35 PM)BURLEY Wrote: Thanks for the report. Is the ramp still open to launch boats? Yep, there were a few boats on the water. It is getting lower each visit though so I'm not sure how long it will last. RE: Frustrating Day at Newton 9/26 - JArner - 09-29-2020 Nice report, that is a good frustration to have ![]() I have the same fish finder and mount on my kayak. It's been great so far, I also purchased the ice transducer last winter for my hard water expeditions. For a budget friendly finder it's hard to beat. |
