Hyrum ice, any luck - chrisg602 - 02-07-2021 Hey everyone, I was thinking about going to Hyrum for the first time today and was wondering how the ice is, from anyone that’s been recently. With it being fairly warm in cache valley lately it makes me a little skiddish. Also, what’s been better fishing, the rainbows or the perch? I don't have any first hand info but I did hear the ice at the ramp is broken up, so someone broke through but if you can get on the ice it is plenty thick enough. I haven't heard of many trout being caught but the perch are bigger than last year but fewer of them. Good luck if you go and let us know how you do. RE: Hyrum ice, any luck - pizzaman_288 - 02-07-2021 Was there yesterday got on from the beach area there was 3 to 5 feet of either slush covered water or broken ice covered water at the edge ice was about 15" where we were fishing we got 5 perch about 10" long and 1 trout about as big missed several bites though while talking on the phone to the wife used a little tear drop jig tipped with night crawler and a tingler spoon tipped with mill worm forgot something to pop the perch eyes out or would of tried those also RE: Hyrum ice, any luck - chrisg602 - 02-08-2021 Thanks for the information I appreciate it. We went to try out Newton for a couple hours instead. We tried a few different spots but didn’t get anything till we got a few small perch near the dam. I’ll probably go do hyrum later this week if I get the time and hopefully get some of those 10 inchers. RE: Hyrum ice, any luck - SkunkedAgain - 02-08-2021 If you can find them on Hyrum, keep moving if you aren't on them, anyway they will be much bigger than Newton... What I've been wondering is what happened to the trout at Hyrum this year? I've never seen such a slow year for trout out of that pond... What are the rest of you finding? I used to love catching the 14" through the ice, but not this year... They gave me the too many birds eating the planters excuse. I talked with an officer about how many older gentlemen paid for their license , boat reg , park pass, gas etc and they catch very few trout for their effort and expense. The response was about the birds and how Hyrum would be Northern Utahs bass destination. I told him that was a poor response. I did catch some of the largest and the largest trout I have ever caught at Hyrum last year but it was very early in the year and not many after that. I only target trout early in the year but still catch quite a few while perch and bluegill fishing but not last year and I suspect the same this year. Sad if they changed that plan so quickly... They used to plant a lot of small fish in the spring and by ice season, they would be nice keepers... Now if they are planting in November they must not be planting very many fish, I sure didn't catch the ton i used to after they planted... Anyway it's too bad, I liked to be able to catch some nice bows... but there are other places to find them... They may be giving me more reasons to not renew my park pass and go to Idaho instead... RE: Hyrum ice, any luck - wiperhunter2 - 02-09-2021 Maybe Hyrum is different but I think it's just like a lot of local trout lakes, it was overtaken by the hordes of people last year, trying to escape the, stuck at home existence, because of C-19. East canyon is another example of a lake being over fished. Hopefully this year will be different and there will be some trout left to catch next Winter, time will tell. RE: Hyrum ice, any luck - gofish435 - 02-09-2021 Here are the numbers for you guys wondering about the trout stocking at Hyrum over the last three years. Rainbow 20,087 7.63" 4/18/2018 Rainbow 24,319 6.92" 8/26/2018 Brown Trout 28,563 5.95" 8/27/2018 Rainbow 7,458 13.03" 10/18/2018 Rainbow 14,928 7.38" 11/19/2018 Rainbow 8,074 7.38" 11/20/2018 Rainbow 26,324 8.49" 4/1/2019 Brown Trout 29.880 6.66" 9/16/2019 Rainbow 18,000 6.06" 10/11/2019 Rainbow 23,508 7.51" 11/20/2019 Rainbow 4,200 10.28" 10/1/2020 Rainbow 5,088 6.47" 10/6/2020 Rainbow 17,112 10.03" 10/20/2020 They all must be wearing masks. RE: Hyrum ice, any luck - wiperhunter2 - 02-09-2021 Looks like the DWR stocking numbers are down a lot this last year, compared to the previous two year. Here's the count for the bows I got, 2018: 74,866 2019: 67,832 2020: 26,400 and no browns like the two years before. Your right the numbers are down because of the DWR discontinuing the spring stocking. I think that the DWR feels like they were losing most of the spring stocking to the birds. One thing I found interesting, I very seldom hear of any brown trout being caught up there. i know they are in the stream and they have been stocking them besides. Caught 1 brown last year- late spring in the lake but near the river inlet- 11# 4oz. Wow, that is the largest brown I've ever heard of being caught in Hyrum and you never told us about it , any pics of it you care to share? RE: Hyrum ice, any luck - SkunkedAgain - 02-09-2021 Well your numbers definitely tell the tale, if they are only stocking at 25% of the usual numbers it's no wonder why the fishing sucks... Don't care if they don't want to stock in the spring, but keep the numbers up when you do stock... That big of drop, no wonder why the perch numbers were down too, it's focused more pressure on the perch since there aren't any bows anymore... Looks like Hyrum will be a whole lot less interesting until things can recover... Thanks for digging up the stocking reports...
