The horrendous streak is finally over!!! I caught a fish - hashbaz - 04-03-2004

A classmate and I went up to Porcupine to try our luck. I hadn't caught a fish in probably 6 or 7 outings. But I caught two. (Horray for HashBaz!!). We fished from shore near the middle of the lake's length. I was using a yellow spotted spinner, and caught a cutt and a brown, 10in and 11in. After hooking the first one it had been so long since I caught a fish that I stood for a minute or too with a dumbfounded look on my face wondering what to do next.

I had wanted to take the canoe out but the wind felt like about 30MPH - definitely not canoe weather! Has anyone found wind to have any effect on fishing? (other than casting)

when i was at little dell yesterday I saw all kinds of weather from strong wind and rain to no wind and the lake looking like glass now i'm saying it is so but they seemed to bite better when the wind was howling

So far my best trip since things started melting is in 20 to 40 mph wind. Try casting a fly in that wind. Lots of fun and plenty of knots to undo. Got plenty of roll casting in but even that was a pain. All the wanna be fisherman either didn't get out and left with out fishing or tried one or two cast and then left. What a waste driving all that way and not even fish. It's really nice when I have the entire lake to myself and only fish 10 ft of shore line.

Good report Loren, Im glad you can still catch fish. I hate droughts like that. That's a tough lake to end a drought on. How full was the Lake? Was the water muddy looking?

wind is always good to fish in, the wind makes waves that breaks the light penatration entering the water so it looks like it's getting dark to the fish. the wind crashing against the bank will lossing up small particals and insects and that will bring small fish close to the banks and the small fish will bring in bigger fish. the wind covers your trolling movment, hides the sound of your motor. so I would say wind can be your friend, but also it can be your enamy. later chuck

Loren- Congratulations on your catch. I went to Mantua on Tuesday with my son Joseph. He caught one trout but I got skunked again. I am about ready to buy the Idaho license and see if I have better luck up there. My boat motor conked out again on us and quit running while in the middle of Mantua, so we rowed back to the dock. I think it isn't getting any spark to the plugs. I took the boat home and parked it and never got the motor fixed. My other son, Nathan, who I own the boat with, took the boat Saturday to the Bear River with his wife to go fishing and didn't know the motor wouldn't start. They pushed out into the water before they realized it and had to row it back to the dock too. He came home and got the other motor from the shed and went back and fished. He was pretty miffed from the reports I heard. When I got home from work I noticed the motor and gas can was put in the trash dumpster! Anyone want an old 1965 Johnson 10 h.p. to fix up or for parts? Tell the "deli" lady hi for me. Have a good one. Acey

KJFN, I've never seen it full, but by the look of watermarks etc I would guess it's at least 20ft low - maybe even 30. The water was really muddy where we were. But that might have been partially due to the wind.
