here fishy fishy fishy... - willfishforfood - 04-19-2004 Hey all. I'm new to the forum. I grew up in Idaho trout fishing and got into catfishing here in Utah. I'm wanting to try out all the other types of fish that are around, but I need to study up on things, first. My questions are regarding catfish. I'll be honest that I do not know the first thing about catfishing such as their habitat, what they eat, what type of weather is best for fishing for them, and most important, how to fish for them. All comments, hints, and information is most appreciated. [signature] Re: [willfishforfood] here fishy fishy fishy... - FlyFishingMoose - 04-19-2004 Well welcome aboard! In Utah Lake and the Jordan, the simplest setup is to just use a nightcrawler or a piece or carp or sucker meat for bait, let it rest lightly on the bottom with little or no weight. Make sure you have heavy line -- bare minimum 8 lb test but you really should have 10 lb. or higher. April and May are traditionally good months to catch some big channel cats, as well as throughout the summer months. Fishing at dusk usually works well, as well as early morning. The middle of the day can sometimes be tough as the fish go deep seeking cooler water. Welcome to BFT! First understand that catfish always feed near or at the bottom so keep that in mind when rigging up.Also I find that fishing for cats is best after dark when the water temp is really warm (cats love warm water. If you are going to fish a certain lake or river just post another question and include what water your going to fish and me or any of these other cat fisherman on the board will surely try to help with information on bait, technics and any other info.[cool] [signature] Re: [willfishforfood] here fishy fishy fishy... - hashbaz - 04-19-2004 Welcome to the site! I've never caught a cat but have been wanting to try. Lately I've been watching for posts on cats; here's a summary of what I've learned: Bait: chicken livers, carp meat, sucker meat, worms, store-bought. Some people say smellier is better and will leave their bait out in the sun for a few hours. (If its hard getting the wife to let let you go fishing, then don't come home smelling like rotten chicken gizzards) Time: Morning, evening and night. How: On the bottom. Throw your bait and wait. If you use less weight the fish is less likely to feel the line and spit out your bait. I've heard of people using a 3way swivel with a worm on one side and a big chunk of carp on the other. The smaller bullheads will go for the worm and keep you entertained until the occasional big channel cat takes the carp. Someone suggested leaving the reel open and letting the cat swim a while with your bait before closing the reel and setting the hook. The catfishing might be a little slow until it warms up some. Once again This is only what I've read, and I'm hoping someone else will have more information on what kind of water/structure etc to look for. Good luck and let us know how it goes. They say catfish are tearing it up. It even made my hometown newspaper. Sounds too expensive to me. I live near one, and it provided hours of enjoyment over the summer, mostly just tiny muds, but there are some bruiser carp, and channels as well, along with an occasional perch, bluegill or white bass, but they are very rare, i think I got two white bass total outa the canal last year. Anyway, when it comes through in about a month, give her a go if you can. Just rig some slip sinkers behind a swivel and give yourself a foot or two of leader, then a hook and drown some worms. Anthony [signature] Re: [Anthonygreer] here fishy fishy fishy... - windriver - 04-20-2004 It is no secret that the best cat fishing is at Lincoln Beach on Utah Lake. Fish the Channels by the little islands. I use 15 lb. hybrid line with a big slip bobber 3 or 4 feet above a size #2 hook. The cat fish take the bait and the bobber slips a couple of feet before it hits the stop so the fish has time to take the bait before the bobber goes under. The bobber is almost a must for the big rocks in the area. Use a big night crawler of uncooked shrimp. I like to fish the Jordan river for cats. Find the deepest hole that you can find, thats where the big cat lay. as for bait carp meat, sucker, shrimp, chicken liver, night crawlers. I like to put a 3/8 oz bell sinker on the bottom the come up a foot put 1 hook come up another foot and put another hook ( I like 2s or 4s ). Channel cats do not feed on the bottom and this rig keeps your bait off the bottom. [signature] Re: [willfishforfood] here fishy fishy fishy... - acey - 04-21-2004 Chicken livers on a treble hook work good. Use sliding egg sinkers about a swivel so when they bite your line pulls through the sinkers and they don't feel the weight. The "In-Fisherman" magazine often has articles about catfish and I have read their book on catfishing. It is very good and I learned a lot there. I haven't fished for them much the last several years, but last week my son-in-law talked me into fishing for them on the Bear River close to home and we had lots of fun just as the sun was setting. I usually take a propane lantern mounted on an extension on a bottle so we can see the bites after dark. They usually feed all night long. I have also caught some good cats on dough bait. [signature] Re: [hashbaz] here fishy fishy fishy... - willfishforfood - 04-21-2004 Thanks for all the good advice with whisker fishing. Hopefully I can learn how to do it all and have some good stories to tell you all in the upcoming months/years, as well as photos to back up my "fish stories." Thanks. [signature] Re: [willfishforfood] here fishy fishy fishy... - Jedburton - 04-21-2004 I always have the best luck fishing for kitties if I use white bass meat. If you can catch a few little ones (about 2-3") just kut them in half the long way through a hook in em without weight and huck it out there as far as you can. I have always caught my biggest ones that way. oh and dont set your bail. let the fish run for about 10-15 feet before you set the hook. Jed [signature] |
