Lower Fish Creek Report - RiverRat77 - 04-22-2004 Drove through the rain and snow to Lower Fish Creek today. I had my doubts when I got to Soldier Summit and the road was snow covered. The road up to Scofield was snow covered too but they were plowing it when I headed up and it was nice and clear on my way out. The lake is clear but I didn't see people fishing until I left. I didn't see anyone catching anything either. Now, on to Fish Creek. I mistakenly posted that the water had been shut off at the outflow diversion. I was wrong. More water is coming out now that before and there are some nice runs to go with the pools that were there before. I fished right above the walking bridge in that run and pool and pulled eleven trout out including a gorgeous rainbow. This is how good the fishing is folks. When i caught those fish, it was kinda hailing or raining ice or something, I'm not sure how to put it. The long stretch down to the railroad bridge yielded one or two fish.....thats usually a money stretch because nobody else fishes it..... Nothing today though. The pool under the railroad bridge only gave up a couple fish too so I went down to some rapid/pool habitat. Then the good stuff started. The fish that I caught down there were BIG!! I have pics that I have to get developed and scanned so I can post them. It seemed like only a few smaller fish were out and about but the nasty weather didn't bother the big boys at all. There were several browns that had to be pushing two pounds and a couple that might have been three. There were some awesome fish out biting today. I lost track after catching about twenty fish in a riffle/pool/run stretch and that was only in the first couple sections after the railroad bridge. It was a great day!! Take gloves or handwarmers or something, I was fishing in snow all day long. The cool thing was the storms went by fast so it would snow for about twenty minutes and then it would be nice and clear and sunny for about the same amount of time..... I had a great time and I will give away what I was fishing with...... I was using Berkely bass minnows and drop shot worms. Not GULP....these are just their soft plastic baits. Try this on your favorite trout water folks, big fish are a sucker for a dying minnow. Thats it.... lots of fish and big fish. The minnows are a numbers bait too but make sure you take a couple bags, the fish tear them up after about four or five strikes..... Hope this helps anyone else looking for some hot river water to fish. Oh, and here are a couple fish from the provo river and Diamond Fork to entertain you picture buffs until I get these others developed. Sorry my face isn't in the photo, I fish alone almost always so I can only do so much with two handfuls of fish and camera. Hope you like these. Ok, nevermind, I'm not a genius and somehow or another, even though I tried to upload the pics, they didn't show but if you send me an email or a PM, I can email them to you....... Hope the report is enough for now.....If anyone has any advice on uploading my pics so I can share them with you, please let me know. Nice post and if I knew how to upload pics I would tell ya but since I dont I guess i cant tell ya. I cant wait to see them. I mainly fly-fish up there, if you do I have great success with a royal wulff with a hares ear dropper. I think I know, but am not sure, Jed [signature] Re: [RiverRat77] Lower Fish Creek Report - PrinceFisher - 04-23-2004 What was the condition of the Lower Fish Creek's water? Was it clear, or was it discolored? I know they've had the water shut off below the Scofield dam for weeks now, and so I'm wondering if the water is running clear now that they've begun to release some water out of the dam. Do you think it would be running clear if I took my fly rod up there this Saturday? Thanks for the info. I think you will have a great time. One of the replies on this topic lists a fly combo that seemed to work for that person. I don't fly fish but I promise you that you will be happy with the size, color and strength of the fish you manage to tie into....... Its just a great place to go with the ducks, fish, squirrels or potguts,.....just a really good place to get away. Best of luck to you, its supposed to be a gorgeous weekend..... [signature] |
