My Biggest Trout Yet.... FisherMOM article - FisherMOM - 04-29-2004 My Biggest Trout yet... and my Favorite Trout Lure ![]() I‘ve fished for trout a few more times since my big skunking on Opening day, April 1st. I did manage to catch a nice fourteen-inch Brown Trout in the Southerntier on Saturday, April 17th. I’d told myself that if I catch a trout big enough to eat that I was going to keep it. And don’t you know that my first and only trout that weekend was a nice fat Brown. It was actually quite an amusing thing to watch me clean my first fish. I did the humane thing and knocked it on the head with the butt of my knife. I was actually pretty surprised that it wasn’t as messy as I thought it would be. David took pictures and laughed through it. I was reading some papers that I printed from online, about how to clean my catch. I didn’t cook it until the next day at home because we had just eaten pizza before I caught it. So when I got home, I went online to the N.A.F.C. website and got into the chat room there. Just the man I was looking for was there…. ROD TENDER. (So named because he has so many kids, when he takes them fishing, he is the "Rod Tender") Rod hooked me up with basic instructions on how to cook it and I cooked it while I was in the chat room! They must think that I am a complete NUT! I also posted some pictures for them to see of the final product. It felt very good to be back in the Ischua Creek, fishing for trout. It was a much nicer day than the open day of trout season. As I stood in the creek, fishing, I had a flashback to last spring. My neighbor, whom grew up in the Southerntier, kept telling me to buy some Panther Martin lures for the trout. Every time we talked about the trout he’d say "Get some Panther Martin lures… cast ‘em upstream and let them float down stream. As they get past you, let them swing around until they are almost even with you and start reeling back in." He said this is when I would get a bite. And he said, "You just can’t beat the flash of a trout coming after that lure!" Well, I did buy some Panther Martin lures and I did as he said. Sure enough, I caught my first trout on a lure other than a fly. I was so excited that I called him from my cell phone. The signal was horrible, but I managed to squeak out to him that the lure worked and I caught my first trout that way. As a matter of fact, I caught most all of my trout last year on a Panther Martin lure because the creek was real high and fast all year. And as a matter of fact... it was a size 4 black and gold Panther Martin that took down this brown trout that I got this year. He was in the riffles upstream when he took the lure. At first I didn’t realize that I had a fish on, I thought that it was the current. It was the biggest trout that I ever caught and I had fun fighting him. He wanted to stay in the strong currents, but I coaxed him into calm water and brought him in! The trout recipe that I used… or more so, the technique in which I cooked it. I left the skin on the trout and rolled it in flour. I put a pat or 2 of butter in the middle of the trout and put it in a fry pan that was warmed up already with butter and Canola oil in it. I also added some garlic to the pan, and sprinkled the trout with salt and pepper. I cooked it about 3 to 4 minutes on each side. I can’t remember for how long I cooked it, but once it was not raw looking, but flaky, is when I removed it. AND OH MY GOODNESS…. What a great taste trout has. It may as well be a Salmon. [signature] Re: [FisherMOM] My Biggest Trout Yet....
