Volunteer with Clinton River Coldwater Conservation - davetclown - 05-07-2004 From: Heather Van Den Berg [mailto:heather@crwc.org] Sent: Thursday, May 06, 2004 9:59 AM To: CRWC list serve Subject: [CRWC] Volunteer with Clinton River Coldwater Conservation Project Dear Friends - The Clinton River Coldwater Conservation Project, the fisheries assessment project for the Clinton River, Galloway Creek, and Paint Creek invites you to volunteer! Throughout the summer of 2003, an incredible amount of fisheries habitat data for the Clinton River and Galloway Creek was collected through the efforts of nearly 120 volunteers. This detailed habitat data allows for improved fisheries management decisions for these streams by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Events like the brown trout brood stock planting in April is a direct result of this data collection and increased knowledge of the Clinton River's fisheries habitat. The steering committee for the Clinton River Coldwater Conservation Project is dedicated to working in partnership with the MDNR, MDEQ, local and county municipalities, other conservation organizations, and the residents of our watershed to make the Clinton River and its tributaries a first class fishery in Southeast Michigan! As residents of the Clinton River Watershed, there is something we all can do! Whether you like to spend time outdoors, identify macroinvertebrates, or find a new fishing hole, please consider volunteering with the Clinton River Coldwater Conservation Project. Throughout the summer of 2004 and into 2005 there are several opportunities to get involved. Here are just a few... Physical Habitat Survey - Collect fisheries habitat data such as width, depth, substrate, erosion, etc. on Paint Creek. Macroinvertebrate Survey - Sample and identify benthic invertebrate communities at selected locations on the Clinton River, Galloway Creek, and Paint Creek. Riparian Buffer Maintenance - Oakland Land Conservancy has an significant conservation easement along the Clinton River in Rochester Hills. Stewardship activities are planned throughout the summer on the mornings of the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month. If you are interested in volunteering with this project, PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!! U.S. Congressman Sander Levin will be there around 8:30 am to help kickoff the 7th Annual River Day for all of you who can join us. Sandy represents District 12 in the U.S. House of Representatives, his district encompasses southern Macomb and Oakland counties, and therefore a large part of the Clinton River Watershed. Sandy is a long-time supporter of Lake St. Clair and the Clinton River, and has provided a lot of federal assistance over the years for water quality improvement projects to benefit the watershed and Lake St. Clair. Together with U.S. Congresswoman Candice Miller, Sandy led the Congressional Resolution last year celebrating Lake St. Clair as "the Heart of the Great Lakes" that endorsed increased efforts to preserve and protect Lake St. Clair as a vital part of the Great Lakes system. Congressman Levin is on a limited schedule for Saturday morning, but we hope you'll stop by in the morning to share some pancakes, sausage and Starbucks coffee with Sandy, and share your observations about our local water resources. The River Day Pancake Breakfast is located at the Village of Rochester Hills shopping center, northeast corner of Adams Road and Walton Boulevard. Look for the big event tent in the parking lot along Adams Road. Contrary to the view out your window this afternoon, the forecast for River Day on Saturday is looking just fine: partly cloudy, high of 74 degrees and only 10% chance of precipitation. Stick with your plans, it's going to be a great day to celebrate and enjoy the wonderful water resources of Lake St. Clair and this river system. Call us if you have questions or need additional information about any of the events, please email or call us. Take care, Dan Keifer Clinton River Watershed Council [signature] |
