That looks like a great project to get into. I dont have much experience, I built a kyak when I was 13, out of wood and canvas cover then I painted the canvas with a latex covering to water proof it. I added insulation and floatation via styrofoam pellets in bags all over the boat before I installed the floor, I have to say we had a scout master that was a master carpenter by trade and he made all the center structure, we had to take a board and cut the ribs and "spine" or the keel of the boat and attach the framing together. It was a blast, I still have the boat and it is a kick to take it out sometimes. We took them down the green for a 4 day 5 night adventure...what a blast!!!

It is very satifying to paddle around in the boat I built. I also should mention that mine is made of ash, soft enough to work and bend I was told at the time but very strong to hold up to abuse..I also painted it with about 15 thick coats of marine waterproofing stuff...I want to say it was verethane. But it was a long time ago, sheesh more than 10 years, almost 15 I did that...but I still have it and it looks brand new.

I was great, I wouldnt dare to use it on a lake such as the berry or anything, I did have it at Echo once, got swamped, still floated though..I built it unsinkable..I took the frame in my dads pool before I put the canvas on and it floated high and dry I paddled in the pool for a while..then took it out and covered it. I want to fiberglass it someday, but I am kind of likeing the canvas for nostalgia. Hope I helped, Good luck it looks like a great boat.

I have built several boats and learned my carpenters trade at a boatyard back east. This will not be a very hard boat to build. If you have patience, stick to it and have enough $ it should be good .

The wood materials can be bought locally, you can use poly resin instead of epoxy to cut costs. The joinery will be quite simple.
