Went again late Sunday/Early Monday - TheBlackAdder - 06-01-2004 Night fishing baby !!! Still didn't catch anything, but I'm getting used to that. Headed out to the lake around 8pm, and fished to about 1 am. It was a rather nice night down there, with the drunk guys singing the Tallyman song and listeing to their echo of " DAY-O" all night. It got even worse when they started the stereo up with the rap music. If there was a time i wished I was deaf, it was then. I ABHOR rap. This was more a spur of the moment trip, so i didn't bring my slipfloats like I wanted too, so i fished the bottom with anchovies. From 9pm through 11pm, a total of about 30 fished surfaced, mostly out near the middle of the cove, and in towards the point just in front of the silty shoreline. Around 12:15 or so, Stripers boiled for about 8 seconds, then no fish surfaced for the rest of the night, that i could hear over the rap music and " Day-O " chants, along with yells to the park ranger. Interesting night...though It was actually pretty nice there, full moon and all. I didn't need my lantern but to climb the hill back to the car. Water was dead calm, too. I'm going to pick up some THILL Waggler slip floats, which are good deep holes and windy ,wakey water ( guess where ) and rig up one rod permanantly with that. maybe i'll get something then. The last time I was out using anchovies, I set them up with one lying on the bottom and another suspended about 2' up from the bottom. The one that was suspended was the one that picked up the hits. The one on bottom didn't get anything. Not sure if this would have helped you out but I thought I would throw it out there anyway. You may have to try rigging up for topwater. One of the problems with the lake is sound does travel, especially when it's stuff you don't like. Also, drunk folks are pretty much a given. I'm going there mainly cause 4 guys I work with are gonna out one night or day with me. We're gonna take the day off and go, and I want to see what works and what doesn't, so the trip doesn't stink... I have a pack of foam thats really dense, used to make rigs float. It works really well for corn, but i'm not too sure it will make anchovies float of the bottom, may be too heavy.. I think slip floats are my answer. That puts your weight on the bottom and the bait at what ever depth you want. Your only limitation is keeping it short enough to still cast. Hope this helps. Back in Louisianna we used to use shrimp for catfish so I caught a sale one day and tried 'em out. The results were pretty nice. I usually caught more than my buddy(though not by much), and all tended to be catfish and stripers. However, there were a few trips when I couldn't get them to touch the shrimp while the anchovie worked fine. Next time your favorite grocery store has a nice sale, pick some up... unpeeled/uncooked it best. I buy enough for a whole season then bring the whole bag each time. As they age and get stinkier they do better. It has created some havoc with the wife if she catches me putting those stinky guys back in the freezer! You are warned I've also seen my buddy do real well with the catfish dough balls at Wal-Mart. I personally tried almost every flavor of catfish dynamite there is and have never caught a fish with it... I have gotten some weak bites, but never a hook up. That stuff is supposed to be fabulous, but it never worked on Mead for me. Could be operator error though. Hope this helps some.. Mark [signature] |
