Fish Survey - davetclown - 08-24-2004 Fish Survey We conducted a fish survey a couple of weeks ago and I thought there might be some interest in the results. The purpose of the survey was two-fold. First, we wanted to evaluate the trout that we stocked this spring; and second, we wanted to get fish numbers at a site where a habitat enhancement project will take place next year. At the first site, we electrofished a 1,000 section below River Woods Park in Auburn Hills. We found
blacknose dace (240) creek chubs (70) bluegill (63) white suckers (50) green sunfish (12) pumpkinseed (8) northern hog sucker (6) fathead minnow (6) rainbow trout (5) brown trout (3) bluntnose minnow (3) common carp (2) largemouth bass (2) rockbass (1) rainbow darter (1)
The second location was a 1,000 foot section in Rookery Woods subdivision (upstream of Adams Rd.). We found
blacknose dace (57) creek chub (35) white sucker (19) bluegill (11) johnny darter (8) green sunfish (5) brown trout (5) northern hog sucker (4) central mudminnow (3) common carp (2) fathead minnow (2) rainbow darter (2) northern redbelly dace (1) rainbow trout (1).
Overall, similar fish were caught between the two sites. I am happy with the number of trout we collected during this survey. Although the numbers are on the low side, I consider these results good for the first year of the program. Especially considering the brown trout were stocked prior to this years spring flood. Auburn Hills has habitat enhancement projects scheduled for next year. We will repeat the survey next year to again monitor the overall fishery and evaluate the benefits of the habitat project.
