Ice fishing for Walleye? - CBR - 12-13-2004
While at Scofield the topic of ice fishing for walleye seemed to come up quite often. Can anyone tell me about some of there success stories and places that have been successful?
Maybe this could kick off planning of a trip up to Starvation chasing those toothy mongrels.

hey did that last year.. only thing was the walleye had other ideas than we did..they only came out to play in the early morning and late evening..
i think most the acction on starvation happens at night there for walleyes..
so you might want to plan a night fishing get together..

that is true at starvation. mornigs and evenings. then they shut right off 30 min later. ron told me he has night fished it alot and only gets fish late durring a full moon when ther is no snow on ice.

if you do a day trip get deep real deep like 80 ft. when the bite turns on they will be in 50 ft. durring the day they are realy down there.

Try a red Jig and half a nightcrawler in about 50 feet of water at about 4:00pm until 7:00pm. look at a map and try and find a hump that has deep water around it, fish right on top of the hump. hope this helps. later chuck

Thanks for the tips, I have Willard on my list of "pull something thru the ice" this winter. I now have all my gear and am ready to get into it! After Scofield I am absolutely hooked on the hardwater action.

You said sfter Scofield your hooked? I'm hoping to head there thursday early. I'm new to the ice game, what works? I'm so excited I can hardly stand it, I've got some gear and just need a few hints. Thanks in advance. I'm also considering Strawberry because I've had some really good fishing in the small bays at the soldier creek dam turn off, any reports on the ice up there?

I have talked to a few and they say the colors change at scofield. When I was there the hot colors were white, chartreuse, glow in the dark, and green. All used in a combination with 1/16 jig heads, ice flies, and small 1 inch tubes and 1 inch curly tails. Tip with either mill worms or wax worms.
We used wax worms in the morning and when things slowed we went to the mill worms and they were going crazy for the mills.
Good luck up there, its going to be crowded so don't get to upset when someone sets up camp within 70 feet of you.

CRAIG JUST ABOUT SAID IT ALL I USED GLOW IN DARK JIGS AND TUBES LITE GREEN/CLEAR GRUB ABOUT 1 INCH WITH A WHITE JIG HEAD WITH BIG RED EYES AND A ICE FLY PINKISH WITH A CHARTUSE TUBE WITH WHITE TAILS HAD THE MOST HITS OFF OF IT TIPPED WITH MILL WORM

I am rounding up the troops for a trip to Strawberry December 26th and have 4 signed up so far. Then after the new year I definately want to bring the assault to Mantua and get into some of those feisty big perch.
I just went and grabbed a lazer 6 inch auger for my trout and perch expeditions since my eskimo baraccuda is such a pain to drill. Will be giving it a workout @ Lower Bells tomorrow, I hiked up yesterday and found 4 inches of solid ice in the deep spots.
Open for more suggestions to hit in the future.

TD-The place I have on my GPS does have some structure,a sharp drop off from 11' to about 27',the eyes seem to stage in the late afternoon and come up from the deeper water.Also I have had this spot on my GPS for years,and it always produces.But things change,so who knows.If we get good ice on Willard,I think you have a good idea about a BFT expedition.

Willard State Park is one of three parks where it is illegal to ride OHV. Even on the ice. I’ve been trying to find out why they won’t allow it. I’ve been told it was because of the park manager won’t allow it. Last July state parks past a new rule allowing OHV to be used is a short list of parks in order to get access on the ice. If anyone would like the names and number of the people to contact PM me and I’ll get them to you.

With this warm weather I’ve had to go back to work. I’m thinking of heading out tomorrow.
My 10 year old boy wants to go fishing everyday the week after Christmas while he is out of school. I have a family Christmas party on the 26th if I mist I would be sleeping outside in the camper. This would mean more time for fishing, Hum.
