Oct. 1 - West Goleta Beach - Float Tube Report - LeapinBass - 10-03-2002 Launched at the stairs at U.C.S.B. at 5:00 pm. The shallow water was pretty dirty so I paddled out to about 8 to 10 foot deep and started working the bottom with the swimbaits. Worked the area for about 45 minutes before going back in shallow to give the high tide a shot. Sitting right in front of the eel grass beds in about 6 feet of water I was throwing the 3" 'Chovy colored Big Hammer as close to shore as possible. First strike turned out to be a yellowfin croaker. A few casts later I get a legal flattie. Bryan shows up, starts throwing the Blue Mackerel Excalibur Long A and nails another legal. Fish the area for another 20 minutes or so until the tide started falling, the waves got larger, and for some reason a lot of weeds appeared in the area making it impossible to get a good cast in. Moved back down the beach only to find the very dirty water I found when I first launched. Called it a day at 7:00 pm. The biggest fish I've landed was a 50+ lb. Black Sea Bass. Actually I've also landed a 100+ lb. Bat Ray but I don't count those as "fish". But... a few weeks ago I hooked into something I couldn't stop which dragged me pretty good. After some thought I've come to the conclusion that it was either a thresher shark or I foul hooked a big white seabass, halibut, or black seabass. But I'll never really know...
