Scofield Weekend! - BEARCLAW - 01-31-2005

Decided it was finally time to get back up to the cabin at scofield for a weekend of fishing. Arrived at the gate around 6pm friday night, unloaded the atv and headed into the park. The temps were very warm for a evening at scofield. The snow had really piled up in the park. We spent the first hour breaking a decent trail into the cabin. We went through drifts that had to be 4 feet deep which surprised me because the whole east side was very accessable to both atv's and foot traffic. Saturday morning came pretty early for us. We headed out to find a way onto the ice that would allow us back off the ice later that afternoon. The snow simply wouldn't pack down and acted more like sugar. We ended up parking the atv's at the cabin and walking out on the ice around noon. We walked from the west shore out past the island and about 300 yards north from there. We figured it was over a mile each way. The ice was pushing 2ft thick. We lowered the finder and instantly marked fish. The water was 10ft. deep and the fish were active. We ended up landing 25 fish by 4pm and then decided it would be wise to walk out before darkness set in. Saturday night the skies cleared and it got extremely cold. We woke up Sunday morning to harder snow and a lot less walking as we were able to ride the atvs down to the ice and out to our same spot. Sunday morning was pretty much a repeat of Saturdays success, landed 30 fish by noon. The fishing was pretty consistent both days. We used ratso's tipped with wax worms or night crawlers, didn't matter which, about 18" below a castmaster. We also put some smelly jelly on as an extra incentive.. Had a great weekend but should brought a snowmobile.

Thanks for the report. It is good to hear that the bite is still good up there. It seems that the action hasn't tapered off as much as in past years as the winter has progressed. I might have to hit it one more time this winter.

[cool]Nice report, Bearclaw. Did you guys catch any big fish (over 20 inches) or any cuts, or just bows in the 14 inch range?

2 were just over 20. Both are still swimmin'[cool].. had one other fish that broke off at the hole. Man I hate when that happens, you don't even get to see how big it is/was...
