Smelly Jelly and Ice - svpdgcar - 03-09-2005

I'm going to hit the ice at scofield this week and I was wondering what everyone has to say about smelly jelly. I have never used it but a buddy of mine tried it on the ice last week and is sold. He used Banana flavor (probably the last flavor I would have chosen).

I guess my question is this.... who uses it and what flavor is best for ice fishing?

alot of the favorites are shad, ansise, and crawdad. At scofield i would give the crawdad a try, i have used smelly jelly but not very often and i cant really see much of a difference.

And i would have never thought of bananna either

I've used glow in the dark garlic smelly jelly at Scofield but I think the glow part worked more then the scent did. My buddy uses crawdad scent but only after everything else in his box didn't work. Can't say I ever seen a day on the ice where it really made that big of a differece. For what it's worth.

I use smelly jelly frequently when fishing for trout on the hard deck. I do feel it makes a difference when the fish are biting tentatively or if you see fish on the finder looking but not taking your offering. I use mainly baitfish or crayfish, as it is what I use when fishing for bass and eyes in other seasons. I have never tried the more exotic flavors.

The scent does make a difference. Last wed. at the berry my boys and I were using a different brand called Mike's in the crawdad flavor, we iced 35 fish and a group next to us didn't land a fish all day, they were using similar jigs and bait but no scent. I'm convinced it works.

I've never done a comparative study, but I usually use Smelly Jelly (in anise or crawdad flavors). My experience is that it increases the number of bites, but maybe I'm just being superstitious.

I fished Strawberry today and was using berkley brand trout scent and it definetly helped today. We were catching a few but when I put that on they went nuts. Cyclone Jack started using some of mine and started catching more fish too. We landed close to 50 fish today. I usually use crawdad smelly jelly though but my dad was using berkley trout scent last week and outfished us so i tried it today and liked it.

I have had good luck at scofield using anchovy smelly jelly.

I have used the berkely scent and it seems to work good, if the fishing is slow just put some extra juice on your jig and give it a try, it has always worked for me up to Strawberry, just don't open the Super Juice Garlic flavored scent in an ice tent, it is so strong it makes you evacuate your tent.[Wink]

[cool]I have never tried the bananna flavor, but this isn't the first time I've heard it works well, so I'll have to try some one of these days, probably next ice season, as I've hung up my sled for the year, and have broken out the tube.

I have used the anchovie sent, however and have had mixed results with it. I don't think it matters at all when fishing for Perch. As long as you have an attractive jig or spoon and your right in their area, you'll nail the Perch, regardless. As for Trout, I think it helps sometimes, and other times I've had some on my jig, and my buddies are catching as many or more fish than I am. I have also had success with the crawdad sometimes.

This bananna flavor and Mike's Lure Lotion (or whatever it's called) in the crawdad flavor has me intrigued, so I think I'll pick some up next year, along with this berkley trout scent.

Anybody done well with this stuff in the softwater seasons too?

[cool]Hey bigcat, are you talking about a Berkley liquid trout scent, or is it the stuff in the tube that is a chartruese color? Just curious.

O4T-
It is liquid in a flip top squeeze bottle. Comes in two different sizes at Sportsmans... Trout scent. Also comes in bass and maybe others.... Really seemed to work yesterday! Hope that helps.

[cool]Cool! Thanks a lot. Maybe I'll try some of that stuff this spring at iceoff on a black woolybugger being towed from my tube and see if it makes a difference.

I don't have any experience with the banana scent but I have found that scents can really make a big difference some days. Some days it seems to help a little and other days it doesn't seem to make a difference. On a few rare occasions it has also seemed to repel fish.

One thing, among many things, that BearLakeMack taught me was to run my fingers up the leader. You have Smelly Jelly (or similar) on your fingers, you might as well get your money's worth by rubbing your fingers up the leader also before cleaning them. When I remember to do it (halfeimers is hell) I believe it helps attract the fish.
