Catalina Trip - JapanRon - 03-26-2005

Hey there guys,

Went to Catalina today. Not Good. 3/4 day boat. Good boat, great crew, beautiful weather, fishing fun............... catching.....NOT !!!

Fish I caught: Starry rockfish, whitefish, sheephead, opaleye, catalina blue, mostly short calico, salmon grouper, sculpin, and a cold or at least a slight fever.

Fished the kelp strings near bird rock then rockfish in 300 feet of water with 8 ounces of lead.

Skipper worked hard and got back at 6:30.

Soooo... I guess youlda rather been working? [Wink]

Sounds like ya got a nice mess for the pan, anyway.

How did ya catch the Opaleye? Those things stink like the dickens when ya clean 'em but sure are nice on the table.

Wish I'd been fishin' today. Beautiful weather.

Hi there,

Nooooo way ! I'm retired and I ain't gonna be around at no real job! It was kinda wierd on the Opaleye ! There were going for the squid strips. They were mixed in with the catalina blue or are they blacksmith perch. Nice size at 1 1/2lbs.

I guess the real deal for our opalyey buddies are green peas but around 6 were put on the boat along with the other perch.

[cool]It looks like the green pea trick only works best at Avalon. I couldn't get them to bite on squid at Avalon. They were also hitting good on strips at the Channel Islands.
