The incident happened Sunday afternoon when Salt Lake City police officers Kevin Joiner and Brian Bridge were off duty and riding horses along the Jordan River Parkway. Finally an 8-year-old boy jumped into the river. He was attempting to rescue a 6-year-old boy who had fallen in just moments earlier. Joiner jumped into the water. He said the water was so cold it took his breath away. He also wasn't expecting the river to be so swift or deep. Joiner grabbed the 8-year-old and held him while he searched for the 6-year-old. He spotted a shoe, lunged toward it and got hold of the 6-year-old boy's ankle. Joiner was able to get both boys ashore, but he thought it was already too late for the 6-year-old. The boy wasn't breathing. Bridge began pumping the boy's chest until he finally started coughing up water. He then turned the boy over and more water came out. "If Brian wasn't there, (the boy) would have been dead," Joiner said. The boys were examined at a hospital and released Sunday evening. Both men downplayed their roles in the incident and don't want to be called heroes. "I'm not a hero. The 8-year-old boy is a hero. He was willing to give up his life for his friend's life," Bridge said. This story appeared in The Daily Herald on page A3. Thanks for posting the article Cat_man. [signature] Re: [cat_man] 2 boys rescued from the Jordan River - ocean - 04-21-2005 Thats another reminder of how dangerous the runoff is !
