Fishing Pet Peeves - Carp_Punisher - 07-15-2005 [#bf0000]Disclaimer: You know when a post starts with one of these it can possibly go to crap really fast. This post is in NO WAY [#bf0000]intended[/#bf0000] to offend, single out, apply to ect... ANY BFT member(s). My observations are based solely on my own observations and experiences. If you resemble one of my pet peeves either change your evil ways or it's something I need to get over (you decide). If you choose to add pet peeves of your own please be sensitive to others. I do not want this post to end up locked. Remember we're all friends here. [/#bf0000] [crazy] [#505000]Yesterday while the fish weren't biting on the Men In Black Clandestine Floatilla, and enduring a few of my fishing pet peeves I got to thinking it would be fun (and potentially disasterous) to post of a few of them......[/#505000] [#505000][/#505000] [#505000]1. Just because you have the worlds best taste in music doesn't mean we all want to hear your favorite selections booming across the lake 300 yards away. Gangsta rap, hip hop, country, heavy metal, easy listening, ect.... are not enjoyed by all. turn it down or buy some headphones. [/#505000] [#505000][/#505000] [#505000]2. Not everyone enjoys your dog. Being allergic to dogs I am always just thrilled when I find one sniffing me, rooting around inside my tackle box, checking out my fish ect.. If you choose to fish with your dog I'm cool with that as long is it is under control and not pestering others.[/#505000] [#505000][/#505000] [#505000]3. Your mother does not work at the lake. Pack it in pack it out. 'Nuff said.[/#505000] [#505000][/#505000] [#505000]4. Try not to talk about stuff you don't comprehend. I just love hearing stores about the monster blue (or flathead) catfish you caught as a child out of Utah Lake. [/#505000] [#505000][/#505000] [#505000]5. Watch your voice volume/conversation content. I am reminded of a time when a small boat with 4 "gentlemen" were 1/4 mile away from shore fishing on Utah Lake. They were speaking very very loud. I could clearly hear each and every profanity (and there were lots and lots of em') uttered by these guys. I'm known to share a few choice words with my friends as the situation dictates but I don't share them with the entire lake and the children fishing from shore. [/#505000] [#505000][/#505000] [#505000]6. With an entire lake to stir up why does it seem the PWC crowd has to showboat 200 yards off shore around the best fishing holes?[/#505000] [#505000][/#505000] [#505000]Like I said I don't want this post to be a flaming post and these are pet peeves in general. Not intended to single anyone out. What are your pet peeves, and remember lets keep it friendly if we can. Let's be nice to bait fishermen, fly fishermen, ect....[/#505000] [signature] Re: [Carp_Punisher] Fishing Pet Peeves - fuzzyfisher - 07-15-2005 my biggest peeve is the dog thing as well.. i have 3 dog's i love my dog's but i know that others dont feel the same way about my dog's i leve them home... and realy [#ff0000](bleeps)[/#ff0000] me off when someone else thinks i have to be around there dog while i'm fishing...leve your dog home where they belong in less your fishing where there are no other fisherman... i dont care how well behaved they are!! i dont care how cute they are!! they are just a annoyance that i dont need while i'm fishing.. [signature] Re: [Carp_Punisher] Fishing Pet Peeves - kokeking - 07-15-2005 My pet peeves are more of the type of things that happen around the ramps, then on the water. When iam on the water and find myself surrounded by"jerks" i can easly move, but at the ramp its not that simple. People that backdown to the ramp then proceed to pull out the coolers ,fishing gear, getting the kids ready, really make my blood boil. Most ramps have a pre-launch area so people can get these things taken care of before they get to the ramp, and block it for 20 mins getting ready. People that cut in line to either load or unload, are another pet peeve ,these types seem to think that thier time is more important then anyone else's and we should always wait for them .Or the guy that can't get his motor to start and after ten minutes of trying .still blocks the ramp because he won't move his boat out of the way. When ever i run across a newbie i either try to help or give them the benefit of the doubt, but when i see a guy that doesnt have a clue, and i offer to help and iam told to mind my own damn bussines, that when i quit being mr.nice guy and will tell him to get his crap outta my way ,cuz i have wasted enough time on him. All i want is to either get my boat unloaded ,so i can get out on the water,or to get it loaded quickly,so i can get on the road to go home.As i load and unload by myself alot,i know that one person takes a little longer, but i swear somtimes i want to pull out what little hair i have left. [signature] Re: [Carp_Punisher] Fishing Pet Peeves - Mc_Lennon - 07-15-2005 I agree with every one of them you posted. I'd like to add a couple more to that, though. First, I hate it when people keep everything they catch. I've seen people take out 6" rainbows off of willow pond before. What's the point of that? There's no meat there. Bugs me so bad. Second, people need to control their kids. Earlier this spring at scofield I was out in my pontoon(the only time I've had it out this year) I was way out past these people. And yet thier one little brat had the audacity to yell "Find your own place to fish dumb @%$#!" Needless to say I moved closer into shore and started casting towards shore. That same day a couple kids came by where I was trapping minnows and proceeded to throw rocks into the water. That made me more mad than I've ever been fishing. Finally, I hate it when people get drunk when their fishing. I don't like alcoholics. My father was one for quite a while. I don't go out to relive horible childhood memories. If you want to drink, please do it in your own home or do it in moderation. Plus the fact that these drunkards actually drive home buggs me. There's no wonder why so many people die in places like spanish fork canyon. Ok. I'm off my rant. [signature] Re: [Carp_Punisher] Fishing Pet Peeves - BassAckward - 07-15-2005 I have a couple of pet peeves When you go fishing and it is not catching.... When someone fishes right on top of you weather they be on shore or on the lake.... and there not cute When someone throws up in your car just because they don't catch a fish ( no sprite and chicken for Geoff's) When you forget to put the plug in your boat When a catfish takes your rod and reel into the lake... When you get all wet in march, after going in after your rod and reel because a catfish thought it needed it more then you did. i have more but will leave it at that.... for now [signature] Re: [Carp_Punisher] Fishing Pet Peeves - clebreto - 07-15-2005 he thing that bugs me the most is crowding, and the inability to control your profanity. I experienced both of these last week. The first was on my trip to Tibble fork the area around the lower part was packed as normal so the kids and I went to the upper end for some seclusion. Then film troop who was moving equipment to the other side using a canoe launched about 5 feet from where I was fishing this wouldn't have been that bad but they had to make several trips. Well the crowd around the lower inlet dissipated so we moved down to fish the inlet we were able to fish without interruption for a short period, then a kid arrived he waded out into the stream and cast straight out over the top on our lines and proceeded to snag them. Well after we unraveled the snag we cast out and again the kid cast over our lines. I could see this happening if we were fishing on the bottom but we were using bobbers so you could clearly see where our line was. Then to top it all off two other men walked up and started fishing from the 10 feet shore between the kid and my son. It was after the one guys first cast snagged my sons line that I said this is enough and packed up and headed home. Respect others space. The other was at the Lindon boat harbor we were fishing off the north side and there was a boat on the other side of the reeds that you couldn't see but you could hear. Every other word was *^%#@!& and they acted like they wanted for everyone to hear because they were yelling it. Im done! [signature] Re: [BassAckward] Fishing Pet Peeves - wades2deep - 07-15-2005 Pet Peeves: - People who come tearing WOT into MY wiper boil and ruin all the fun. - Biting deer flies. - Mrs. W2D's side-arm, triple-lindy-with-twist, plus or minus 30 degrees and/or 30 yards, stay the hell out of my way if you know what's good for you casting technique. - 98% of PWC riders. - Outrageous launch fees. I just want to fish the lake - not buy it! - 150' rule violaters. - Cannon speakers, especially when they're blaring country music. - Ramp toads. Learn to back down a trailer in the Wal-Mart parking lot. - Strewn trash and litter. This should be grounds for a whuppin'. - Losing all my lures. Buy your own damn tackle. - Showing up to fish with me in my boat with one sandwich and cheap, warm beer. DMack, your beer is OK!!! - "C'mon, let me throw your baitcaster. I casted one before, promise". - Dirty/muddy shoes in the boat. - Whiner and complainers. Hey buddy, you're out fishing. It's all good! - "I can't go, no kitchen pass". My friend, the real problem is you just didn't marry very well. - The smell of the fish-cleaning station at high-noon in July. - The smell of the outhouse next to the fish-cleaning station at high-noon in July. - The smell of Morty, the outhouse and fish-cleaning station superintendent - any time if the day. - And finally, windy & rainy weekends during the best fishing months. W2D [signature] Re: [Carp_Punisher] Fishing Pet Peeves - Hawkez - 07-15-2005 I hate taking people fishing, lend them gear, show them what to use and watch them catch fish while I sit by without a bite. HAHA! Happens all too often. On a more serious note...I have no objection to people taking young children fishing. My Dad took me when I was much younger and I've been "hooked" ever since. If you take your kids, pay attention to them. Don't watch your kids skip rocks where I am fishing. I hate that. Too many times I've seen someone catch a smaller game fish and play games with it, such as football. If you don't intend to eat it throw it back. I whether it be beer or soda cans, worm container, and especially for those who respool your reel on the shore and leave the old line lieing there, PICK UP YOUR TRASH! Besides that I am pretty easy going. [signature] Re: [Carp_Punisher] Fishing Pet Peeves - bkidder - 07-15-2005 well, i dont mean to be the first one to stir the pot, but here goes. my pet peave while fishing is on the ramp as well. but mine is different. it is the people who are so darn impatient that they rush everyone. i have an 81 year old grandpa that can only get in the boat when its on the ramp dock. also, it takes him a few minutes. id say our average time is around 6 or 7 minutes to get it in the water. ive been yelled at by impatient people- i hope none of you guys- and didnt appreciate it. needless to say theyve heard some of my most choice words! bottom line, as far as im concerned, be patient and mind your own business. you dont know the situation of the person that your waiting for. believe me- i try to do it as fast as i can. i also try to avoid times that the ramps are busy. and if you yell at me while im launching then dont be surprised to get it right back! i hope no one is personally offended by my pet peave. but i do hope that it makes you re-think how you treat strangers on the boat ramp. [signature] Re: [Carp_Punisher] Fishing Pet Peeves - ocean - 07-16-2005 My pet peeves are when you are on a spot and start catching fish people move in on you immediatly! Also people with waders who park themselves right in front of when you shore fish for some reason they think just because you are on land they can come and park themselves 5 feet in front of you![mad] Usually about the second time a 2 ounce weight flies by their head they get the message but it shouldnt come to that. Also the dogs do irritate me.I take my dogs they either are with my kids or they are sitting right next to us.I dont like it when dogs run around unsupervised in an area were other people are fishing. [signature] Re: [Carp_Punisher] Fishing Pet Peeves - BearLakeFishGuy - 07-16-2005 [font "Comic Sans MS"][black][size 3]Ok, I couldn't resist chiming in on this one. My peeve is people who buy "fishing" boats and then don't want any slime or fish in/on the boat. For example, I went fishing with a friend, who shall remain nameless and is not a 'member' or 'lurker' on this board, and we really got into catching whitefish on Bear Lake during the spawning run in December. Well if anyone has caught these critters during the spawn, you know that milt and eggs are usually spewing from their vents. Well I landed a fish and dislodged the hook and put the fish in his livewell. A few eggs dripped out onto the side rail of the boat (not on the carpeting). I no sooner turn around to start fishing again and this guy literally stops fishing, pulls out a bucket and sponge and is cleaning up a few eggs that dripped on his boat. Jeez-us-rice! Its a bloody fishing boat! Not a yacht! I don't trash other peoples boats and I don't want them to trash mine, but c'mon. Its December, very cold, hands are numb, fishing is hot and this guy is giving his boat a sponge bath! Another analogy to this story is the guy who has his custom painted and decaled-F250 with a six in lift, custom wheels, mudder tires and then doesn't want to drive down a dirt road cause it might get "dusty" or "muddy". Give me a break! Losers I say![/size][/black][/font] [signature] Re: [BearLakeFishGuy] Fishing Pet Peeves - wades2deep - 07-16-2005 BLFG... LMAO!!!!! Fishing with Felix Unger (Odd Couple for you youngsters), he's all yours!!! I've been known to be a bit of a boating clean-freak, but at least I wait until it's on the trailer at the end of the day. Then we clean it good. I hate week-old, baked-on gook. W2D [signature] Re: [Carp_Punisher] Fishing Pet Peeves - outdoorfanatic - 07-16-2005 MOSQUITOS!!!!!!!!!!!! Re: [Carp_Punisher] Fishing Pet Peeves - CATCHandreEAT - 07-16-2005 This is a great topic... Speaks volumes on the folks we have here. Initially I thought it would degenerate but such has not been the case. (knock knock) Heres mine: - Wasting fish... I had a neighbor of mine offer to giv me some salmon that he had caught in Alaska... Nice offer that I couldn't (though I should have) refused. He told me he had caught 3 salmon he had them steaked up and frozen in his freezer. I thanked him for the fish and took it home and thawed it in the fridge and threw it on the grill. I ate a bite and it tasted like sawdust...literally. Turns out it had been previously "cooked" by 3 years of freezer "burn". Eat or use what you keep. - Wasting fish- I hate walking through the weeds and stepping in a pile of rotted or crunchy dead fish be it catfiah carp or anything. IMO if someone doesn't have a use for the fish catch and release or don't fish at all. I tend to look at public property as my property (I know it's OUR property but go with me on this one) I don't want people trashing it up just like I don't want anyone trashing up my own yard. Same with the litter bugs too. Dead fish on the shore is just nastier "litter" -Smokers- I always wonder why people think it's their god given right to force me to suck in their filthy habit. I will be a lot more tolerant of smokers when babies are born with a pack of camels and a chimney in their head.Thankfully this has become less of an issue since I have been mobile on the 'toon. I will move my fishng spot if someone should light up and the wind is blowing in my direction. It just makes me mad that I should have to do that. And don't even get me started on the filter issue... there must be 250 butts for every 1 piece of other litter. It's the same in the city, at the lake at the park on the streets... In MY driveway and MY grass. Why should I have to clean up MY property because of some other arse's habit. I saw where someone else said something to the effect of 98% of PWC users are their pet peeve ( I agree with that one too) but there are NO redeeming qualities to smoking. At least alcohol has some health benefits (no, I'm not a drinker either). Why do we as tax payers (substantially) subsidize tobacco and smoking (governent subsidized suicide) and then states (including Utah) sue the tobacco companies for billions? It is complete lunacy. Oh wait this is a fishing board... I'm going 'daddin at the 'berry tomorrow...hope to catch some bigg'n's [signature] Re: [Carp_Punisher] Fishing Pet Peeves - fairwayphilly - 07-16-2005 I'll come clean. I'm guilty of the dog thing. Not very often, because I am concious of it and feel bad when my lab has to visit every one before she settles down. Now for my pet peeves, I'll second the PWC gripe, they can have 90% of the lake without a word from me. Just give me a little breathing room around the shore. Next is the upside down spinning reel; come on, There is no way that can feel natural. You would think after they saw some one else casting with one hand, three times as far as them, and reeling forward the lights would come on and they would give it a try. [signature] Re: [Carp_Punisher] Fishing Pet Peeves - FlyingFish - 07-16-2005 People who "know it all." Fishing with someone who thinks that everything they do is the best way or the only way to do something. Im not talking about helpfull tips and tactics - those are always welcome, just the "my way or the highway attitude." (If I wanted that Id have brought my wife along[]) I echo the dog, trash, kids running wild, the harvest everything type, dead fish, bugs, so on and soforth. [signature] Re: [BearLakeFishGuy] Fishing Pet Peeves - BearLakeMack - 07-16-2005 [font "Comic Sans MS"][black][size 3]Being a boat owner who tries to outfit and maintain a substanial investment, at least to me, I have some observations too. [/size][/black][/font] [font "Comic Sans MS"][black][size 3][/size][/black][/font] [font "Comic Sans MS"][black][size 3]I can see you point, BLFG, but I can see the other side too. Taking a little time to wipe up eggs before they freeze makes the clean up job much easier especially if its my boat and I'm the only one cleaning it after our trip. At least your friend let you keep fishing and cleaned it up himself. Same with blood and slime. One quick clean up and it safer and easier to clean than after it dries and crusts over. Some guys take a little pride in their rides.[/size][/black][/font] [font "Comic Sans MS"][black][size 3][/size][/black][/font] [font "Comic Sans MS"][black][size 3]I do a lot of jigging and tend to use scents and baits. Well, let me tell you, that dang stuff (scents) doesn't clean off of surfaces from boats very easily. Its formulated to stick and it does and everything like road grit, dust, etc sticks to it! I have friends who like the spray type scents and don't think twice about coating the inside of the boat with the stuff. A chunk of carp, chub, sucker, cisco, etc can just as easily be tossed over the side than inside the boat. I'd rather spend my time fishing than clean up my boat from some guy's inconsiderate behavior. Apply you scents over the side and keep it in the lake not the boat.[/size][/black][/font] [font "Comic Sans MS"][black][size 3][/size][/black][/font] [font "Comic Sans MS"][black][size 3]I know I'm a little picky about keeping things in their place and trying to keep thing organized so when you need something it always where it belongs. Ever caught a fish, needed the needle nose pliers and could find them when you just had them a second ago? [/size][/black][/font] [font "Comic Sans MS"][black][size 3][/size][/black][/font] [font "Comic Sans MS"][black][size 3]I know guys that don't think twice about emptying and spreading their entire tackle box's contents all over the boat. Boats are tight quarters to begin with and having to trip over open boxes or having lures, knives, litter, etc laying around is dangerous especially when trying to get a fish landed or when you're under way to another spot. [/size][/black][/font] [font "Comic Sans MS"][black][size 3][/size][/black][/font] [font "Comic Sans MS"][black][size 3]Bottom line, you're a guest on someone else's boat. Ask before doing things not accepted by all, If you smoke, which I do, ask a boat owner if it's cool. Ask if the owner minds if you have a beer or two. At the end of the day, offer assistance in helping get the boat cleaned up, stuff stowed, and ready to trailer home. It's their boat so show some respect for what they have worked hard to obtain and maintain. This will also insure you'll be a continued and welcomed guest on someone's boat.[/size][/black][/font] [signature] Re: [Carp_Punisher] Fishing Pet Peeves - BrittHunter - 07-16-2005 Mine is gonna have to be the dog thing as well, okay maybe not the dog thing its people who bring there dog out with them that have no control over there dog. people who take there dog out and cant make the dog stay put next to them or listen to them. there is nothing worse then fishing and have a dog come check out you and everything you have and listening to the owners scream at there dogs to "come" and it pays no attention to them. so if you do take your dog out fishing with you just make sure it minds you! Because I dont know your dog and I dont know it reaction to what I do. [signature] Re: [BearLakeMack] Fishing Pet Peeves - BearLakeFishGuy - 07-17-2005 Rich, I agree with you, and if you read my original post it said...."I don't trash other peoples boats and I don't want them to trash mine", but what I put up with that day didn't even border on being anal retentive.....It was!! You gotta meet this guy one day and then you'll see what I mean. Here are two other examples. On the top of my buddies' boat's steering counsel is a rubber grommet that is meant for running your depthfinder/VHS radio wires through and there is even a place to mount the depth finder. Well he says he doesn't want any wave splash or road spray on his depth finder in the given location so he fabricates and builds a whole new mount for his depth finder (a fairly cheap one to boot) so it could be mounted closer to the inside of the boat where it is definitely less convenient to see when fishing. All this just to keep it clean. He also extended the main on his boat trailer about 5 feet so he didn't have to get his rear tires of his truck in the water when loading/unloading his boat. Why I asked? Well he said he was worried about water getting into his rear axle of his truck when he backed the truck into the water to load/unload his boat. Unbelieveable? No way...I'm dead serious on this one too! [signature] Re: [Carp_Punisher] Fishing Pet Peeves - hashbaz - 07-17-2005 1. Looking 50 feet down the bank and seeing a 5 year old out-fish me! 2. Other boaters getting too close. I have a small (and unstable) canoe. Getting hit by even a small wake is scary. 3. When I can't get a bite and a fish surfaces, just a few feet away, mocking me.
