Wing style - HFT - 04-05-2006

A friend of mine,Erick Otzinger originated a wing style years ago called a "hackle wing". I have been tying a bunch of these getting ready for the summer. It is not as hard as it looks and it looks hot. Here is a pic.

Most of the time these flys have just one wing,in this pic. I made a double just to see how it would look on a size 16.

I have been using that style, but never thought of stripping one side. Do you put anything on the feather after you have pulled it down?
In my "Flly Tier's Benchside Reference" book it say's that Robert Jorgensen came up with this pattern as a substitute for quill wings.
Man I tell you, the ol' saying it has been done before is so true.

I did not put anthing on the wing. and I could very well be wrong on the wing style,Erick has a lot of patterns with pacific fly group that uses that wing.

How did the fishing at Falcons ledge go?

We fished the Middle cause he lives in Jeramy Ranch. We walked and talked, mostly about how I would handle certain situations (like if a customer doesn't catch a fish). I told him I like to draw attention the the beauty we are surrounded with, plus let them know before we start what conditions could be.
We got to a hole and I threw out my fly and fish on right off the bat. I told him it might be slow for a little while being 9:00am, sunny. I predicted fish turn on around noon and low and behold, there they were. We both caught many fish and had a blast.
Walking back, he told me to send him a profile of myself and pictures and them he said he would get a partition for the guide quarters, soooooo, you tell me, did I get it?[Wink]
